Lillian Gertrud Asplund was the last American survivor of the Titanic disaster. She was thought to be the last Titanic survivor with actual memories of the sinking, as the remaining survivors were less than one year old at the time. A passenger in third class, she escaped from the sinking ship on lifeboat 15, with her mother Selma and younger brother Felix.
Following her death, only two of the 712 Titanic survivors are still alive, both of whom live in England.
Selma, who lost three sons and her husband in the sinking of the White Star Liner in 1912, told her daughter it was wrong to talk about the disaster, and accordingly Lillian never publicly spoke about her memories.

He was a Communist politician active in French and international politics. Fraenkel was born to Jewish parents in 1921 in Danzig (then an independent territory, thus allowing him a stateless status) now in northern Poland. He began by fighting for extreme-left Zionism under Hashomer Hatzair, where Marxist ideology mixed with Jewish nationalism. Arriving in France in 1938, to study agriculture at Nancy, he moved to study chemistry and in 1940 joined his mother at Grenoble, where he just missed being raided by the Gestapo. He then fled to Switzerland and was interned in the Gierenbad camp in Zürich, where he met the novelist and philosopher Manes Sperber, the future Racine specialist, Lucien Goldmann, and Aby Wieviorka, a major translator from Yiddish in Paris. During the 1960s and 70s Fraenkel crossed the path of many persons who became public personalities - politicians like Alain Krivine and Lionel Jospin, university lecturers like Jean-Marie Brohm and Georges Vigarello, as well as many journalists. In 2002 he decided to join the Ligue communiste révolutionnaire "to break his isolation", but was disappointed by it and did not long remain a member. Boris Fraenkel committed suicide by jumping into the Seine from Pont du Garigliano (the highest bridge in Paris, near parc André Citroên). His body was found two days later at the level of the 8e arrondissement de Paris.

Shin Sang-ok was a prolific South Korean film producer and director, with more than 100 producer and 70 director credits. He is most famous for having been kidnapped by the former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, for the purpose of producing critically acclaimed films. In 1978, actress Choi Eun-hee, recently divorced from Shin, was kidnapped from Hong Kong to North Korea. When Shin traveled to Hong Kong to investigate, he was kidnapped as well. The kidnappings were on orders of future leader Kim Jong-il, who wanted to establish a film industry for his country to sway international opinion regarding the views of the Workers' Party of Korea. The North Korean authorities have denied the kidnapping accusations, claiming that Shin came to the country willingly. Shin and Choi made secret audio tapes of conversations with Kim Jong-il, supporting their story. Shin was put in comfortable accommodations, but, after an escape attempt, was placed in prison. He was brought to Pyongyang in 1983, to learn why he had been brought to North Korea. His ex-wife was also brought to the same dinner party, where she first learned that Shin was also in North Korea. They re-married shortly afterwards, as suggested by Kim Jong-il. From 1983 Shin directed seven films with Kim Jong-il acting as an executive producer. The best known of these films is Pulgasari, a giant-monster film similar to the Japanese Godzilla. In 1986, eight years after his kidnapping, Shin and his wife escaped while in Vienna for a film festival. They managed to seek political asylum from the United States Embassy before they were found out. Kim Jong-il became convinced that the couple had been kidnapped by the Americans. They eventually fled safely. Shin worked in the US in the 1990s under the pseudonym Simon Sheen, directing 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up and working as an executive producer for 3 Ninjas Kick Back and 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain. At first, Shin was reluctant to return to South Korea, because he feared that the government's security police would not believe the kidnapping story. He returned to South Korea permanently in 1994, and continued to work on new movies. His last movie as director is Kyeoul-iyagi (The Story of Winter) (2002, unreleased). He had a liver transplant in 2004, and died of complications of hepatitis two years later. At the time of his death, he was planning Genghis Khan, a musical. South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun posthumously awarded him the Gold Crown Cultural Medal on April 12, 2006, the country's top honor for an artist.

He was a professor of pharmacology at the University of British Columbia and Holocaust survivor. Originally from Slovakia, he is known for his escape, at the age of 19, from the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland during the Second World War, and for having provided some of the earliest and most detailed information about the mass murder that was taking place there. Vrba and a fellow prisoner, Alfréd Wetzler (1918–1988), managed to flee Auschwitz on 10 April 1944, three weeks after German forces had invaded Hungary (a German ally), and after SS-Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann had arrived in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, to begin the deportation to Auschwitz of the country's Jewish population. The 40 pages of information the men passed to Jewish officials when they arrived in Slovakia on 24 April – which included information about the use of gas chambers and crematoria – became known as the Vrba-Wetzler report.
