R I P of the day

Doohan James (b. 1920-03-03 / d. 2005-07-20) alias Scotty

Doohan suffered from Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and lung fibrosis in later life. In 2004, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
the cause of his death is identified as pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. In what may be regarded as an ironic coincidence, Doohan died on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, arguably the greatest engineering achievement in human history.
Almost two years after his death, approximately one-quarter ounce (7 grams) of Doohan's ashes were sent into space, as he had requested in his will. The ashes, along with those of Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper as well as almost 200 others, were launched on the SpaceLoft XL rocket, on April 28, 2007, when the rocket briefly entered outer space in a suborbital flight before parachuting to earth, as planned, with the payload still inside. The rest of his remains were scattered over Puget Sound in Washington.
beam me up, Scotty, is a catch phrase from the original series star trek.

Born 1943-04-30. Domain:Music. Cause of death:Age

He was an American singer, songwriter and musician who was a teen idol in the early 1960s and also appeared in films. According to Billboard magazine, he had thirty-eight Hot 100 chart hits, ten of which reached the Top 20. He had six gold singles in his career. Vee's career began in the midst of tragedy. On February 3, 1959, "The Day the Music Died," three of the four headline acts in the lineup of the traveling Winter Dance Party—Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper—were killed in the crash of a V-tailed 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza airplane, along with the 21-year-old pilot, Roger Peterson. (Dion DiMucci, the fourth headliner, had opted not to travel on the plane.) It crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, en route to the next show on the tour itinerary, in Moorhead, Minnesota. Velline, then 15 years old, and a hastily assembled band of Fargo schoolboys (including his older brother Bill) calling themselves the Shadows volunteered for and were given the unenviable job of filling in for Holly and his band at the Moorhead engagement. Their performance there was a success, setting in motion a chain of events that led to Vee's career as a popular singer. Vee continued performing live until 2011 when diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Chick

Born 1924-04-13. Domain:Art. Cause of death:Age

He was an American cartoonist and publisher, best known for his evangelical fundamentalist Christian "Chick tracts". He expressed his perspective on a variety of issues through sequential-art morality plays. Many of Chick's views were controversial, as he accused Roman Catholics, Freemasons, Muslims, and many other groups of murder and conspiracies. His comics have been described by Robert Ito, in Los Angeles magazine, as "equal parts hate literature and fire-and-brimstone sermonizing". Chick's views have been spread mostly through the tracts and, more recently, online. His company, Chick Publications, says it has sold over 750 million tracts, comics tracts and comic books, videos, books, and posters designed to promote Evangelical Protestantism from a Christian fundamentalist perspective. They have been translated into more than 100 languages. Chick was an Independent Baptist who followed a premillennial dispensationalist view of the End Times. He was a believer in the King James Only movement, which posits that every English translation of the Bible more recent than 1611 promotes heresy or immorality.

Thomas
Steven. 2008-07-14

Born 1970-00-00. Domain:Business. Cause of death:Accident

Former Boulder resident and Webroot founder Steven Thomas appears to have died of injuries from a fall, the Honolulu medical examiner said.
"The injuries he had are consistent with a fall from a height," said Dr. Kanthi De Alwis, who performed the autopsy Monday. "However, at this point, we have not concluded the manner, which means whether he jumped or accidently fell."
Homicide is not suspected at this time, she said. Toxicology tests are being conducted, which could take several weeks, she said.
De Alwis determined that Thomas had been dead five to six days when hikers found his body Sunday.
The 36-year-old entrepreneur was found about 200 feet below the Pali lookout, a scenic overlook in the mountains just northeast of Honolulu on Oahu island. The spot is about 5 miles from Thomas' beachfront home in Lanikai, outside Kailua.
Thomas had been missing for two weeks. He had recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, but refused medication and medical attention. His behavior in the months and weeks leading up to his disappearance increasingly alarmed family members.
In April, he was arrested after he ran naked into a race/walk event in front of his home. More recently, Thomas expressed deep dismay over his investments, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and his family's plans move back to Boulder, according to reports published in Hawaii.
Thomas stayed with visiting family members at a Waikiki hotel in the days before he disappeared, according to news reports. He told them that the balcony of their hotel room was not high enough for what he needed to do, his brother told reporters.
Friends and family members have said Thomas did not exhibit signs of mental-health problems until recently.

Disch
Thomas Michael. 2008-07-04

68

Born 1940-02-02. Domain:Writing. Cause of death:Suicide

SF author, critic, and poet Thomas M. Disch died of suicide in his New York City apartment. Ellen Datlow reports that Disch had been depressed for several years, especially by the death of long-time partner Charles Naylor, and worries of eviction from his rent-controlled apartment.
Disch had been maintaining a livejournal (http://tomsdisch.livejournal.com/). His last post was about inflation: "
Inflation/ Starvation/ Fun:
Short of succumbing to the madness of anorexia, I doubt I am likely to experience actual starvation before I die. Nor, I'd bet, will most of those who visit this site. But I'd also bet that most of us have felt the pinch of inflation in our daily diet. I remember the rapid evolution of low-cost middle-class A & P into up-scale, twice-the-price Food Emporium with no practical difference except the prices and the phasing out of cooking staples, a process still barely begun in most supermarkets. The eventual goal is shelves stocked only with bachelor commodities--breadfast cereal, frozen entrees for dieters, and bellywash in small bottles. Cooking gas will be rationed in winter as people try to heat their urban apartments with their ovens. Etc.
I'm curious as to where we are on that scale now. How has your own diet been affected? I had sticker shock this week when I found that a "low-cost" lunch has climbed from $5 to $10/15 in just the last couple years. The Tv advertises a $5 slice of pizza as a bargain. I don't see how teens can get by unless they are dealing drugs or balling for dollars.
But that's just me. Maybe there have been no changes in your part of Omaha at all. Just curious.
" And a few weeks before:
"
Will the soil still be arable
once Carthage is deleted? Will we be able
to eat the tomatoes? But hush!
I see a snitch Follow me into the sewer
We'll be safe underground
"
And also...
" The Tablets of Common Knowledge 1
Two of them appeared in a perp-walk
on Channel One tonight, looking tough and stoic--
but still young enough to serve as someone's
bitch once they've been bled by their lawyers
and whoever may be able to spare them, a while,
the horrors of an enforced sodomy. That.
as we know, is what prison is there for
and that is why there is an interval
between the sentencing and the first rape.
Kill yourselves while you can, guys.
It's what I would do.
"

He was a decorated American war hero, and a son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton. He was the chairman of True North Partners, a venture capital firm.
Walton died when the CGS Hawk Arrow homebuilt aircraft (Experimental Aircraft under FAA regulation) that he was piloting crashed in Jackson, Wyoming. Walton's plane crashed at 12:20 p.m. local time (1820 GMT), shortly after taking off from Jackson Hole Airport.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
The loss of airplane pitch control resulting from the pilot/owner's improper reinstallation of the rear locking collar on the elevator control torque tube, which allowed the torque tube to move rearward during flight and loosen the elevator control cable tension.
Just before his death, Walton was estimated to be worth US$18.2 billion by Forbes magazine, and he was tied with his brother Jim as the 4th richest person in the United States and 11th-richest person in the world.
