Hopf
Heinz. 1971-06-03

77

Born 1894-11-19. Domain:Science (Math style). Cause of death:Age

In 1920, Hopf moved to Berlin to continue his mathematical education. He studied under Ludwig Bieberbach, receiving his doctorate in 1925. In his dissertation, Connections between topology and metric of manifolds (German Über Zusammenhänge zwischen Topologie und Metrik von Mannigfaltigkeiten), he proved that any simply connected complete Riemannian 3-manifold of constant curvature is globally isometric to Euclidean, spherical, or hyperbolic space. He also studied the indices of zeros of vector fields on hypersurfaces, and connected their sum to curvature. Some six months later he gave a new proof that the sum of the indices of the zeros of a vector field on a manifold is independent of the choice of vector field and equal to the Euler characteristic of the manifold. This theorem is now called the Poincaré-Hopf theorem.

Born 1907-04-14. Domain:Politics. Cause of death:Age

In 1959, Papa Doc suffered from a heart attack and sustained oxygen deprivation that may have affected his sanity. He had been a diabetic since early adulthood and also suffered from heart disease and associated circulatory problems. On May 24, 1959 Duvalier suffered a massive heart attack and, possibly as a result of a subsequent insulin overdose, was unconscious for nine hours. Many associates believed that the neurological damage he sustained during the long period of time he was unconscious affected his mental health and made him paranoid and irrational.

Krull
Wolfgang. 1971-04-12

72

Born 1899-08-26. Domain:Science (Math style). Cause of death:Age

He was a German mathematician working in the field of commutative algebra. In mathematics, more specifically in ring theory, Krull's theorem, named after Wolfgang Krull, proves the existence of maximal ideals in any commutative unital ring. The theorem was first stated in 1929 and, following the theory of Zermelo-Fraenkel, it is equivalent to the axiom of choice.

Hendrix
James (alias: Jimi Hendrix). 1970-09-18

27

Born 1942-11-27. Domain:Music. Cause of death:alcohol, other drugs

On May 3, 1969, Hendrix was arrested at Toronto's Pearson International Airport after heroin and hashish were found in his luggage. Hendrix argued in his trial defense that the drugs were slipped into his bag by a fan without his knowledge, and he was acquitted.
Jimi Hendrix was found dead in the basement flat of the Samarkand Hotel at 22 Lansdowne Crescent in London. Hendrix died amid circumstances which have never been fully explained. He had spent the night with his German girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, and likely died in bed after drinking wine and taking nine Vesperax sleeping pills, then asphyxiating on his own vomit. For years, Dannemann publicly claimed that Hendrix was alive when placed in the back of the ambulance; however, her comments about that morning were often contradictory and confused, varying from interview to interview. Police and ambulance reports reveal that not only was Hendrix dead when they arrived on the scene, but he had been dead for some time, the apartment's front door was wide open, and the apartment itself empty. Following a libel case brought in 1996 by Hendrix's long-term British girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, Monika Dannemann allegedly committed suicide.
Some reports indicated that the paramedics who escorted Jimi out of the apartment did not support his head and that he was still alive. According to this version of events, he choked on his own vomit and died during the trip to the hospital, because his head and his neck were not supported.
A sad poem written by Hendrix that was found in the apartment has led some to believe that he committed suicide. The most plausible theory, however, is that he simply misjudged the potency of the sleeping pills, and asphyxiated in his sleep due to an inability to regain consciousness when he vomited.

Rindt
Jochen. 1970-09-05

28

Born 1942-04-18. Domain:Sport. Cause of death:Accident

During practice for the 1970 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, near Milan, Rindt was attempting to set a competitive qualifying time against the more powerful Ferraris. At first he insisted on driving the Lotus 49 but was told by Colin Chapman that only the Lotus 72 was available. Either he drove the 72 or he didn't have to drive was the choice Chapman gave him. Rindt elected to have the critically important wings removed in an attempt to gain a higher top speed and took to the track.
As Rindt braked for the Parabolica corner, the Lotus 72 suddenly darted left and slammed hard into the guard rails. The crash had possibly been caused by one of his front brake shafts (the car had inboard brakes) failing. The barriers were placed too high for the revolutionary wedge design of his Lotus 72. He was immediately rushed to hospital, but died on the way. Rindt had only recently acquiesced to wearing a simple lap belt, and had slid underneath where the belt buckle cut his throat. He was the second Lotus team leader to be killed in two years, as Jim Clark had been killed in 1968.
Rindt is buried at the central cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) in Graz.
At the time he died Rindt had won five of that year's ten Grands Prix, which meant that he had a strong lead in the World Drivers Championship. At that stage he theoretically could have been overtaken by Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx. However Rindt's Lotus team mate, Emerson Fittipaldi, won the penultimate Grand Prix of the year at Watkins Glen, depriving Ickx of the points he needed to win the title, and so Rindt became motor racing's first posthumous World Champion. The trophy was presented to his Finnish widow Nina Rindt nee Lincoln, daughter of famous Finnish racer, Curt Lincoln. In a tragic twist of irony, it was learned that Jochen had promised Nina he would retire from F1 if he won the world championship.

de Oliveira Salazar
Antonio. 1970-07-27

81

Born 1889-04-28. Domain:Politics. Cause of death:Age

He was a Portuguese professor and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968. His Council of Ministers briefly served as acting President of the Republic in 1951; he was never President of the Republic, but was the virtual dictator of the country in the manner of Franco and Mussolini. In 1968, Salazar suffered a brain hemorrhage. Most sources maintain that it occurred when he fell from a chair in his summer house. In February 2009 though, there were anonymous witnesses who confessed, after some research about Salazar's best-kept secrets, that he had fallen in a bathtub instead of from a chair. As he was expected to die shortly after his fall, President Thomaz replaced him with Marcello Caetano. Despite the injury, Salazar lived for a further two years. When he unexpectedly recovered lucidity, his intimates did not tell him he had been deposed, instead allowing him to "rule" in privacy until his death in July 1970.
