Saarinen a gagné 16 Grand Prix. 1971 : Vice-Champion du Monde en 250 cm³ 1972 : Champion du Monde 250 cm³, vice-champion 350 cm³ 1973 : 3 victoires en 250 cm³, 2 victoires en 500 cm³

Pasolini was killed in tragic and controversial circumstances at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on May 20, 1973. He retired four laps from the end of the 350cc race. On the first lap of the 250cc race, Pasolini fell from his motorcycle, and Jarno Saarinen was unable to avoid crashing into him. A pile-up involving twelve riders ensued, and Pasolini and Saarinen lost their lives.
Over the years, the condition of the track on that day has been the subject of considerable debate. The crash has often been attributed to a spill left on the track during the 350cc race when Walter Villa's Benelli began leaking on the penultimate lap, a problem which was exacerbated when his pit team encouraged him to finish the race in order to collect championship points. Race officials neglected to clean up the spillage prior to the 250cc race, and one rider, John Dodds, made his concerns known to authorities, only to meet with threats. However, Pasolini's fall and the damage to his bike were both consistent with the bike having seized.

De Montherlant published Le solstice de Juin in 1941 -- an essay in which he expressed his admiration for the German army and claimed that France was justly defeated and conquered in World War II.
Montherlant mostly hid his pederastic tendencies during his lifetime. In 1912, he had been expelled from the prestigious Sainte-Croix de Neuilly school for a relationship with a younger pupil. His novel Les garçons (1969) and his correspondence with Roger Peyrefitte (author of Les amitiés particulières (1943), also about homosexual relationships between boys at a Roman Catholic boarding school), are the main testaments to this side of his character.
Between 1960 and 1972, Montherlant was a member of the Académie française. According to Peyrefitte, he was beaten up by some youths which caused a serious injury to his eye. He was going blind on account of that and he committed suicide in 1972.
