Fortin
André. 2000-05-08

Born 1962-11-17. Domain:Music. Cause of death:Suicide

Dédé Fortin was a founding member, frontman, and vocalist of the Québécois band Les Colocs, formed in 1990. In 2000 Fortin was said to have been saddened by the break-up of a relationship. He committed suicide at his apartment by the Japanese ritual of seppuku, a kind of disembowelment. A friend found him in a pool of blood. Four days afterwards, fans left flowers and messages in his memory at his building on Rachel Street, in the Plateau neighborhood of Montreal. Others criticized his act; one writer in Le Devoir said that he was "not a hero." The day before, the Colocs manager Raymond Paquin had received a poem by Fortin. He published it posthumously in La Presse. In part the poem read: Condemned by doubt, immobile and timorous; I am like my people, indecisive and a dreamer; I speak to whomever wants to hear of my fictive country, my heart full of vertigo and consumed by fear. Several years later, the remaining members of the band adapted it as a song, which they released in 2009.

Villeneuve
Gilles. 1982-05-08

32

Born 1950-01-18. Domain:Sport. Cause of death:Accident

On his final qualifying lap for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder, Villeneuve was attempting to beat Pironi's faster time. As he came up behind Jochen Mass' March-Ford, the front left wheel of his car came into contact with the right rear wheel of Mass' car, who moved aside to let Villeneuve through. Villeneuve moved the same way to pass Mass' car and was launched into the air before nose-diving into the soft earthen embankment just outside the armco and somersaulting along the side of the track. The violence of the accident reduced the car to its cockpit, and ripped Villeneuve's seat from the back of the monocoque. Villeneuve, still strapped to his seat, was thrown across the track and into the catch fencing just outside the corner. When the medical team arrived, he was not breathing. Villeneuve was resuscitated at the scene, but his injuries were fatal. He died in a local hospital that evening, his fatal injuries were likely caused by the force of his car landing for the first time after the initial impact.

Muybridge
Eadweard. 1904-05-08

74

Born 1830-04-09. Domain:Other. Cause of death:Age

He was a British photographer who spent much of his working life in North America. He is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion in 1877 and 1878, which used multiple cameras to capture motion in stop-action photographs, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip. He went on to make many studies of animals and humans in motion, capturing what the human eye could not break down as separate movements. In 1874, while still living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muybridge discovered that his young wife Flora had a lover, a Major Harry Larkyns. On 17 October, he sought out Larkyns and said, "Good evening, Major, my name is Muybridge and here's the answer to the letter you sent my wife." He shot and killed the major pointblank. Muybridge was tried for murder. His defense attorney pleaded insanity due to a head injury that Muybridge had sustained following his stagecoach accident. Friends testified that the accident had dramatically changed Muybridge's personality from genial and pleasant to unstable and erratic. The jury dismissed the insanity plea, but he was acquitted for "justifiable homicide". The episode interrupted his horse photography experiment. After the acquittal, Muybridge left the United States for a time to take photographs in Central America, returning in 1877. Having divorced his wife and been awarded custody of their son, Florado Helios Muybridge (nicknamed "Floddie" by friends), as was customary at the time, he had the boy put in an orphanage while he was out of the country. Muybridge believed Larkyns to be the boy's biological father but, as an adult, Florado was reported as bearing a remarkable resemblance to Muybridge. Florado Muybridge worked as a ranch hand and gardener. In 1944 he was hit by a car in Sacramento and killed. Eadweard Muybridge returned to his native England for good in 1894, where he published two additional popular books of his work. He died in Kingston upon Thames while living at the home of his cousin Catherine Smith, Park View, 2 Liverpool Road. Muybridge was cremated and his ashes interred at Woking in Surrey.
