Bertrand
Gustave Joseph Marie. 1976-05-23

80

Born 1896-12-17. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Age

He was a French military intelligence officer who made a vital contribution to the decryption, by Poland's Cipher Bureau, of German Enigma ciphers, beginning in December 1932. This achievement would in turn lead to Britain's celebrated World War II Ultra operation. Bertrand's intelligence associates had purchased documents pertaining to the Enigma machine from Hans-Thilo Schmidt (codenamed "Asché" by the French), an employee at the German Armed Forces' Cryptographic Agency. In December 1932, then-Captain (later, General) Bertrand turned these documents over to the Polish Cipher Bureau's chief, Major Gwido Langer. Asché's documents, according to cryptologist Marian Rejewski's testimony, proved in practice crucial to his mathematical solution of the military Enigma machine's wiring. During his work with the Poles, Bertrand used the code name Bolek, given him by the Poles. Bertrand was to learn of the Poles' success against Enigma only six and a half years later, at a trilateral Polish-French-British conference held in the Kabaty Woods, south of Warsaw, on 25 July 1939, just five weeks before the outbreak of World War II. In 1973, the Paris publishing house Plon published his book, Enigma ou la plus grande énigme de la guerre 1939-1945 (Enigma, or the Greatest Enigma of the War of 1939-1945). The book, one of the principal primary sources on the history of Enigma decryption, for the first time gave a detailed account of the some eleven years of Franco-Polish collaboration in breaking and reading Enigma before and during World War II.

Born 1900-10-07. Domain:Politics. Cause of death:Suicide

Himmler was arrested on 22 May by Sergeant Arthur Britton, and in captivity, was soon recognized. Himmler was scheduled to stand trial with other German leaders as a major war criminal at Nuremberg, but committed suicide in Lüneburg by swallowing a potassium cyanide capsule before interrogation could begin. These cyanide tablets were fitted in caps in SS officers’ teeth (which they snapped open and swallowed the tablet) before the Holocaust began so that they would always have the choice of suicide if anything went wrong. His last words were Ich bin Heinrich Himmler! (“I am Heinrich Himmler!”). Shortly afterwards, Himmler’s body was secretly buried in an unmarked grave on the Lüneburg Heath. The precise location of Himmler’s grave remains unknown.

Parker
Bonnie. 1934-05-23

23

Born 1910-10-01. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Murder

She was an attractive young woman, small at 4 ft 11 in (150 cm) and weighing only 90 pounds (41 kg).
Manhunter Frank Hamer organized an ambush to get the gang.
the lawmen opened fire, killing Bonnie and Clyde while shooting a combined total of approximately 130 rounds. By 9:15, the couple were dead. The posse, under Hamer's direct orders, did not call out a warning, or order the duo to surrender. Clyde was killed instantly from Oakley's initial head shot. Bonnie did not die as easily as Clyde. The posse reported her uttering a long, horrified scream as the bullets tore into the car. The officers emptied the specially-ordered automatic rifle, as well as rifles, shotguns and pistols at the car.
Some sources say Bonnie and Clyde were shot more than 50 times, while other sources claim a total closer to 25 bullet wounds per corpse, or fifty total.
Bonnie and Clyde wished to be buried side by side, but the Parker family would not allow it.
The following words (from a poem of Bonnie's) are inscribed on Bonnie's stone:
"As the flowers are all made sweeter: by the sunshine and the dew,
So this old world is made brighter: by the lives of folks like you."

Barrow
Clyde. 1934-05-23

Born 1909-03-24. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Murder

In the famous "Eastham Breakout" of 1934, Clyde's lifetime goal appeared to come true, as he masterminded the escape of Henry Methvin, Raymond Hamilton and several others. The Texas Department of Corrections received national negative publicity over the jailbreak, and Clyde appeared to have achieved what Phillips describes as the burning passion in his life — revenge on the Texas Department of Corrections. It was an expensive revenge, for all concerned, as the killing of a guard (by Joe Palmer) brought the full power of the Texas and federal governments to bear on the manhunt for Bonnie and Clyde, ultimately resulting in their deaths. As the guard, Major Crowson, lay dying, Lee Simmons of the Texas Department of Corrections reportedly promised him every person involved in the breakout would be hunted down and killed
