McCambridge
Carlotta Mercedes Agnes. 2004-03-02

Born 1916-03-16. Domain:Performing. Cause of death:Age

Carlotta Mercedes Agnes McCambridge was an American actress of radio, stage, film, and television. Orson Welles called her "the world's greatest living radio actress." She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her screen debut in All the King's Men (1949) and was nominated in the same category for Giant (1956). She also provided the voice of the demon Pazuzu in The Exorcist (1973). In 1954, she co-starred with Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden in the offbeat western drama, Johnny Guitar, now regarded as a cult classic. McCambridge and Hayden publicly declared their dislike of Crawford, with McCambridge labeling her "a mean, tipsy, powerful, rotten-egg lady. In 1979, McCambridge's son John Markle, a UCLA graduate with a Ph.D. in Economics, joined the Little Rock, Arkansas investment firm Stephens Inc. after working for Salomon Brothers in New York City. Markle was a successful futures trader, and quickly rose through the company's ranks. McCambridge gave Markle $604,000 to manage for her, but in the fall of 1987, the company discovered that Markle had opened a secret account in McCambridge's name. Soon the company found that Markle had been charging trading losses to the Stephens house account, while crediting profitable trades to McCambridge's account. Markle was later shown to have forged his mother's signature in opening the account. Markle was placed on medical leave, then fired from his position at Stephens. McCambridge refused to cooperate with Markle and the company in instituting a repayment scheme that would have kept the matter from becoming public, saying that she had done nothing wrong and that Stephens Inc. owed her money. Shortly thereafter, in November 1987, Markle killed his family—his wife Christine (age 45) and daughters Amy (age 13) and Suzanne (age 9)—and then himself. He left a note taking responsibility for his crimes and a long, bitter letter to his mother. The letter contained the following: "Initially you said, 'well, we can work it out' but NO, you refused… You called me a liar, a cheat, a criminal, a bum. You said I have ruined your life… You were never around much when I needed you, so now I and my whole family are dead — so you can have the money… 'Night, Mother." A $5 million lawsuit was filed against Markle's estate and McCambridge claiming fraud and misappropriation of funds. Although some of the mishandled funds had been handled under McCambridge's name through Markle's power of attorney, she herself was subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing.

O Brien
Mary (alias: Dusty Springfield). 1999-03-02

59

Born 1939-04-16. Domain:Music. Cause of death:Cancer (breast)

Many stories abound as to the origins of the names but certainly Dusty herself is quoted as saying that hers was the nickname given her by school friends because she was such a tomboy and loved playing football out in the streets with the boys! The ‘explanation’ for the name ‘Springfields’ comes from the anecdote that they used to rehearse in fields during the spring.
1993 saw the release of the ‘Heart and Soul’ single with Cilla Black to celebrate the latter’s 30 years in the music business and this was followed by what turned out to be Dusty’s last album, ‘A Very Fine Love’. She had for a long time nurtured the desire to return to Nashville. As part of the Springfields all those years previous, she had been asked to stay – it was almost like returning home for her. Nearing the completion of the recording, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. The album was released in 1995 after Dusty had been given the all clear. The last live television appearance that Dusty made was on the show ‘Later With Jools Holland’ where, accompanied by Alison Moyet and Sinead O’Connor amongst others, she sang the track ‘Where Is A Woman To Go'.
Dusty’s cancer returned and was diagnosed as terminal. She moved to Henley-on-Thames and was able to spend some peaceful times looking out over the garden at the ‘pretty things’ which she always aspired to do.

Carter
Howard. 1939-03-02

65

Born 1874-05-09. Domain:Other. Cause of death:cirrhosis of the liver

He was an English archaeologist and Egyptologist known for having a primary role in the discovery of the tomb of 14th-century BC pharaoh Tutankhamun. The clearance of the tomb with its thousands of objects continued until 1932. Following his sensational discovery, Howard Carter retired from archaeology and became a part-time agent for collectors and museums, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Detroit Institute of Arts. He visited the United States in 1924, and gave a series of illustrated lectures in New York City and other cities in the United States that were attended by very large and enthusiastic audiences, sparking Egyptomania in America. The archaeologist's (natural) death so long after the opening of the tomb, despite being the leader of the expedition, is the piece of evidence most commonly put forward by sceptics to refute the idea of a "curse of the pharaohs" plaguing the party that violated Tutankhamun's tomb.

Lawrence
David (alias: D.H. Lawrence). 1930-03-02

45

Born 1885-09-11. Domain:Writing. Cause of death:Infection (Lungs)

In March 1925 he suffered a near fatal attack of malaria and tuberculosis.
Despite his marriage to Frieda, it was during the years in which "Women in Love" was being written that Lawrence developed a sexual relationship, in the town of Tregerthen, with a Cornish farmer by the name of William Henry Hocking. The affair, brief though it was, seems to indicate that Lawrence's fascination with themes of homosexuality, which he would explore further in Women in Love and Aaron's Rod especially, related to his own, personal sexuality. Indeed, in a letter written during 1913, he writes, "I would like to know why nearly every man that approaches greatness tends to homosexuality, whether he admits it or not." He is also quoted as saying, "I believe the nearest I've come to perfect love was with a coal-miner when I was about sixteen."
