Born 1940-06-01. Domain:Performing. Cause of death:Cancer (lung)

René Murat Auberjonois was an American actor, singer, voice artist, narrator and director best known for playing Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999). He first achieved fame as a stage actor, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1970 for his portrayal of Sebastian Baye opposite Katharine Hepburn in the André Previn-Alan Jay Lerner musical Coco. He went on to earn three more Tony nominations for performances in Neil Simon's The Good Doctor (1973), Roger Miller's Big River (1985), and Cy Coleman's City of Angels (1989); he won a Drama Desk Award for Big River. Auberjonois was born in New York City. His father, Swiss-born Fernand Auberjonois (1910–2004), was a Cold War-era foreign correspondent and Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer. His paternal grandfather, also named René Auberjonois, was a Swiss post-Impressionist painter. His mother, Princess Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat (1913–1986), was a great-great-granddaughter of Joachim Murat, one of Napoleon's marshals and King of Naples during the First French Empire, and his wife, Caroline Bonaparte, Napoleon's youngest sister. His maternal grandmother, Hélène Macdonald Stallo (1893–1932), was an American, from Cincinnati, Ohio; his maternal grandfather's mother was a Russian noblewoman, Eudoxia Michailovna Somova (1850–1924), and his maternal grandfather's paternal grandmother, Caroline Georgina Fraser (1810–1879), who was married to Prince Napoleon Lucien Charles Murat, was an American, from Charleston, South Carolina. Auberjonois had a sister and a brother, and two half-sisters from his mother's first marriage. His family moved to Paris after World War II. That is where, at an early age, he decided to become an actor. After a few years in France, the family moved back to the United States and joined the South Mountain Road artists' colony in Rockland County, New York, whose residents included Burgess Meredith, John Houseman, and Lotte Lenya. During this part of his youth, he performed the young boy's part 'Bert' in All My Sons with the community theatre group The Rockland Foundation Players (which later changed its name to Elmwood Playhouse). Auberjonois died from metastatic lung cancer at his home in Los Angeles at age 79.

Ritt
Martin. 1990-12-08

76

Born 1914-03-02. Domain:Directing. Cause of death:Age

Ritt's 1964 film The Outrage, is an American retelling of the Kurosawa film Rashomon, and stars Laurence Harvey, Paul Newman, Claire Bloom, Edward G. Robinson, Howard Da Silva, and William Shatner. The film uses the Western genre to tell the same story as the Japanese movie. Like the original Kurosawa film, this film contrasts the stories of various witnesses to a crime. Shatner and Robinson listen to four different versions of a rape/murder, told alternatively by Harvey, Bloom, Newman and Da Silva. Harvey is the one murdered, but tells his story through an Indian medicine man. Each story is a biased opinion of what happened, and the movie never resolves which story is true (if any). Like the Kurosawa original, Ritt's film is an example of nonlinear storytelling.

De Luna
Carlos. 1989-12-08

27

Born 1962-03-15. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Murder

Carlos DeLuna was a convicted murderer who was executed by the state of Texas on December 8, 1989. However since his execution by lethal injection, doubts have been raised about the conviction and the question of guilt. An investigation published by the Columbia Human Rights Law Review in May 2012 has strengthened these claims. DeLuna was charged with killing a gas station attendant, Wanda Lopez, on February 4, 1983 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The cashier died from a single stab wound caused by an 8inch buck knife. He was executed in Texas for the murder of a filling station clerk six years earlier—a crime that De Luna’s relatives, friends, and supporters believe was committed by a violent felon named Carlos Hernandez. About forty minutes after the attack, police found De Luna shirtless and shoeless and hiding under a pickup truck a few hundred yards from the station. “I didn’t do it,” he told the officers, “but I know who did.” There was no physical evidence linking De Luna to the crime—no blood, even though the victim, who had been stabbed repeatedly, had struggled with her attacker and bled profusely. Two eyewitnesses identified De Luna at trial, one saying he saw him outside the station with a knife, the other saying he saw him fleeing the scene. De Luna had been in the area when the police arrived. He testified that he had hidden under the pickup because he was on parole and had been drinking—a violation that could send him to prison. He stated that Hernandez had committed the crime, but the lead prosecutor told the jury that Hernandez was a “phantom,” although in fact Hernandez was well known to the prosecutor’s second chair, who had prosecuted him in another case. The jury found De Luna guilty, and he was sentenced to death. After a 2006 reinvestigation of the case, the Chicago Tribune reported that five persons who knew Hernandez stated that he had boasted of committing the crime and gloated that De Luna, whom he called his “stupid tocayo” (namesake) had gone to Death Row in his place. Several of the witnesses said they had not come forward initially because they feared that Hernandez would kill them; Hernandez died in prison in 1999. A senior detective who knew both Hernandez and De Luna, told the Tribune that the filling station stabbing was the kind of crime Hernandez, but not De Luna, would commit.

In the wake of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, Meir appealed to the world to "save our citizens and condemn the unspeakable criminal acts committed." Outraged at the perceived lack of global action, she authorized the Mossad to hunt down and assassinate the Black September and PFLP operatives who took part in the massacre. The 1986 TV film Sword of Gideon, based on the book Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team by George Jonas, and Steven Spielberg’s movie Munich (2005) were loosely based on these events.
