Richard Douglas Fosbury was an American high jumper, who is considered one of the most influential athletes in the history of track and field. Besides winning a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics, he revolutionized the high jump event with a "back-first" technique, now known as the Fosbury Flop, adopted by almost all high jumpers today. His method was to sprint diagonally towards the bar, then curve and leap backwards over the bar, which gave him a much lower center of mass in flight than traditional techniques. He continued to be involved in athletics after retirement and served on the executive board of the World Olympians Association. In 2014, Fosbury unsuccessfully challenged Steve Miller for a seat in the Idaho House of Representatives. Fosbury ran for Blaine County Commissioner against incumbent Larry Schoen in 2018, won the seat, and took office in January 2019. At the next Olympics in 1972 at Munich, 28 of the 40 competitors used Fosbury's technique, although gold medalist Jüri Tarmak used the straddle technique. By 1980, 13 of the 16 Olympic finalists used it. Of the 36 Olympic medalists in the event from 1972 through 2000, 34 used "the Flop". Today it is the most popular technique in modern high jumping. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Fosbury took the gold medal and set a new Olympic record at 2.24 m (7 ft 4+1⁄4 in), displaying the potential of the new technique. Despite the initial skeptical reactions from the high-jumping community, the "Fosbury Flop" quickly gained acceptance. In the Finals competition, only three jumpers cleared 2.20 m (7 ft 2+5⁄8 in), and Fosbury was in the lead by virtue of having cleared every height on his first attempt. At the next height, 2.22 m (7 ft 3+3⁄8 in), Fosbury again cleared the bar on his first jump. His teammate, Ed Caruthers, cleared on his second effort, while Valentin Gavrilov of the Soviet Union missed on all three attempts and earned the bronze medal (third place). The bar was raised to 2.24 m (7 ft 4+1⁄4 in), which would be new Olympic and United States records. Fosbury missed on his first two attempts, but cleared on his third, while Caruthers missed on all three of his attempts. Having won the gold medal and broken the American record, Fosbury asked the bar to be raised to 2.29 m (7 ft 6+1⁄8 in), hoping to break Valeriy Brumel's five-year-old world record of 2.28 m (7 ft 5+3⁄4 in). However, none of his attempts at 2.29 m came close to clearing. On March 13, 2023, his former agent, Ray Schulte, announced Fosbury's death the previous day after a short bout with a recurrence of lymphoma.

Morin lost his sight at the age of six due to glaucoma, but his blindness did not prevent him from having a successful career in mathematics. He was a French sociologist and researcher at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. Castel was born in Saint-Pierre-Quilbignon, now part of Brest. He initially studied philosophy in the late 1950s. In the late 1960s, he met Pierre Bourdieu and began working with him in sociology. His initial work dealt with psychology and psychiatry, establishing a critical sociology of these issues and linking this work to Michel Foucault, particularly to his 'genealogical approach'. He further dealt with exclusion, or rather what he called the 'disaffiliation', which affects individuals 'by default'. His later and perhaps best known work examined how the wage system, which at first was despised, has gradually established itself as the reference model and has been progressively associated with social protections, and the concept of social property, creating a constitutive status of 'social identity'. Castel was responsible for the formation of Le Groupe d'analyse du social et de la sociabilité (GRASS), a specialised group of sociologists within the CNRS.

Ponticelli was born "Làzzaro" in Alseno, Piacenza, Italy. In 1907, when he was nine years old, he moved to France, and more than six years later, in 1914, he joined the French Foreign Legion at age 16. Ponticelli saw action against Germany, and was wounded shortly after his entering of service in 1914. He was discharged from the French Foreign Legion, and later joined the Italian Army in 1915. Ponticelli was wounded again versus the Austrians in Tyrol. Hit in the head by artillery, he miraculously survived.
During the 1930s, he founded a piping and metal work company with his brothers called "Ponticelli Frères" ("Ponticelli Brothers"), which became wealthy and still exists today and is well-known in his field.

When Bartok was lost in poverty, and was stubbornly refusing help of any kind ( regarding it as degrading), Menuhin bought him a sonata.
Menuhin made several recordings with the German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, who had been criticized for conducting in Germany during the Nazi era. Menuhin defended Furtwangler, noting that the conductor had helped a number of Jewish musicians to flee Nazi Germany.
The name Yehudi means 'Jew' in Hebrew.
Ironically, in November 2005 his son Gerard was dismissed from his post as chairman of the Yehudi-Menuhin-Stiftung for alleged neo-Nazi opinions.

Despite being diagnosed with bone cancer, Cazale continued to work, his final appearance being with his then fiancée Meryl Streep in The Deer Hunter. When distributor Universal Studios learned of Cazale's illness, they were reluctant to insure him, but Streep and director Michael Cimino went to bat for him and won out. Cazale did not live to see the release of the film, and thus never learned that every feature in which he starred had received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. No other actor with multiple films to his credit has such a distinction.
