Balestre
Jean-Marie. 2008-03-27

86

Born 1921-04-09. Domain:Sport. Cause of death:Age

After the war he established a successful French automobile magazine called Auto journal. He was a founding member of the Fédération Française du Sport Automobile, a French national motorsport organization, in 1950, and in 1961 became the first president of the International Karting Commission of the FIA. He was elected president of the FFSA in 1973 and president of the FIA's International Sporting Commission in 1978. He was instrumental in transforming the International Sporting Commission into the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA) in 1979.
Balestre was heavily involved in what is colloquially called the FISA-FOCA war, a political battle over finances and control of the Formula One World Championships between 1980 and 1982. Balestre and his opponent, Bernie Ecclestone, settled the dispute after Enzo Ferrari brokered a compromise. Balestre signed the first Concorde Agreement, under which FOCA was granted the commercial rights to Formula One while the FIA retained control of all sporting and technical regulations.
Balestre maintained the presidency of the FFSA until the end of 1996.

Rosenberg
Walter (alias: Rudolf Vrba). 2006-03-27

81

Born 1924-09-11. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Cancer

He was a professor of pharmacology at the University of British Columbia and Holocaust survivor. Originally from Slovakia, he is known for his escape, at the age of 19, from the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland during the Second World War, and for having provided some of the earliest and most detailed information about the mass murder that was taking place there. Vrba and a fellow prisoner, Alfréd Wetzler (1918–1988), managed to flee Auschwitz on 10 April 1944, three weeks after German forces had invaded Hungary (a German ally), and after SS-Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann had arrived in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, to begin the deportation to Auschwitz of the country's Jewish population. The 40 pages of information the men passed to Jewish officials when they arrived in Slovakia on 24 April – which included information about the use of gas chambers and crematoria – became known as the Vrba-Wetzler report.

On 30 September 1999, Moore announced that he was suffering from the terminal degenerative brain disorder Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, and the illness had been diagnosed earlier in the year.
He died as a result of pneumonia, secondary to immobility caused by the palsy, in Watchung, New Jersey. Rena Fruchter was holding his hand when he died, and she reported his final words were "I can hear the music all around me".
Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) (or the Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome, after the Canadian physicians who described it in 1963) is a rare degenerative disorder involving the gradual deterioration and death of selected areas of the brain. The sexes are affected approximately equally and there is no racial, geographical or occupational predilection. Approximately 6 people per 100,000 population have PSP.

Born 1927-02-25. Domain:TV/Radio. Cause of death:Suicide

Jean Prat was a French television director, born in Milan (Italy) and died in Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine). He was assistant to Claude Barma and René Lucot before being appointed director in 1953. From 1955 to 1968 he was the regular director of Lectures pour tous, the programme of Pierre Dumayet, Pierre Desgraupes and Max-Pol Fouchet. At the same time, he directed 17 dramas in the series En votre âme et conscience, as well as several plays (Goldoni, Chekhov). Jean Prat hanged himself on 27 March 1991. The reason for his suicide was what he himself called the wreckage of television at the time. "He died, said Yvan Audouard, to see television dying under his impotent gaze of the longest and cruellest of diseases: mediocrity."

Gagarin
Yuri. 1968-03-27

34

Born 1934-03-09. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Accident

Gagarin became deputy training director of Star City. At the same time, he began to requalify as a fighter pilot. On 27 March 1968, he and his instructor died in a MiG-15UTI on a routine training flight near Kirzhach. It is not certain what caused the crash, but a 1986 inquest suggests that the turbulence from a Su-11 'Fishpot-C' interceptor using its afterburners may have caused Gagarin's plane to go out of control. Weather conditions were also poor, which may have contributed to the inability of Gagarin and the instructor to correct before they crashed.
