Chambers
Marilyn. 2009-04-12

56

Born 1952-04-22. Domain:Performing. Cause of death:Unknown

The cause of death was not immediately known. A family friend, Peggy McGinn, said Chambers' 17-year-old daughter found the actress' body Sunday night at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Canyon Country. Chambers was pronounced dead at the scene, the county coroner's office said Monday.
Chambers and fellow actresses Linda Lovelace and Georgina Spelvin shot to fame at a time in the early 1970s when both American social mores and the quality of hard-core sex films were changing.
For the first time, films like "Behind the Green Door" and "Deep Throat" (also released in 1972 and starring Lovelace) had decent acting and legitimate if fairly thin plots. As the audiences for them grew to include couples, they also began to take on higher production values and to be seen in places other than sleazy theaters.
Marilyn Chambers was born Marilyn Ann Briggs.

Hoffman
Abbott. 1989-04-12

52

Born 1936-11-30. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Suicide

Hoffman was 52 at the time of his death, which was caused by swallowing 150 Phenobarbital pills. He had been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder in 1980; while he had recently changed treatment medications, he had claimed in public to have been upset about his elderly mother, Florence's, cancer diagnosis. Hoffman's drug infused body had been found in his apartment in a converted turkey coop on Sugan Road in Solebury, Pennsylvania. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by about 200 pages of his own handwritten notes, many about his own moods.
His death was officially ruled a suicide, but many who knew him refused to believe that he had willingly taken his own life, particularly when he was so concerned about his mother's health and well-being. As reported by The New York Times, "Among the more vocal doubters at the service today was Mr. Dellinger, who said, 'I don't believe for one moment the suicide thing.' He said he had been in fairly frequent touch with Mr. Hoffman, who had 'numerous plans for the future.'"
After defeating the CIA in a public courtroom, Hoffman prepared for a cameo appearance in Oliver Stone's anti-Vietnam War movie, Born on the Fourth of July. He essentially played himself in the movie, waving a flag on the ramparts of an administration building during a campus protest that was being teargassed and crushed by state troopers.

Hardy
René. 1987-04-12

75

Born 1911-10-31. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Age

He was captured by the Gestapo and agreed to work with Klaus Barbie although it is not clear what this implied. He may have given information leading to the capture of Jean Moulin and of a number of other resistance leaders on June 21st, 1943, at a meeting where Hardy escaped. This led many Resistance leaders to suspect him of being a traitor, and Lucie Aubrac sent him a pot of poisoned jam, which he did not eat.
After the war, Hardy was tried twice for collaboration, but was found not guilty, despite committing perjury at the first trial. Shortly before his death he was accused again by Klaus Barbie, but died before any new charges were brought. After the war, he became a novelist.

Roosevelt
Franklin Delano . 1945-04-12

63

Born 1882-01-30. Domain:Politics. Cause of death:Stroke

In August 1921, while the Roosevelts were vacationing at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Roosevelt contracted an illness, at the time believed to be polio, which resulted in Roosevelt's total and permanent paralysis from the waist down. For the rest of his life, Roosevelt refused to accept that he was permanently paralyzed. He tried a wide range of therapies, including hydrotherapy, and, in 1926, he purchased a resort at Warm Springs, Georgia, where he founded a hydrotherapy center for the treatment of polio patients which still operates as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. After he became President, he helped to found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (now known as the March of Dimes). His leadership in this organization is one reason he is commemorated on the dime. At the time, when the private lives of public figures were subject to less scrutiny than they are today, Roosevelt was able to convince many people that he was in fact getting better, which he believed was essential if he was to run for public office again. Fitting his hips and legs with iron braces, he laboriously taught himself to walk a short distance by swiveling his torso while supporting himself with a cane. In private, he used a wheelchair, but he was careful never to be seen in it in public. He usually appeared in public standing upright, supported on one side by an aide or one of his sons. In 2003, a peer-reviewed study found that it was more likely that Roosevelt's paralytic illness was actually Guillain-Barré syndrome, not poliomyelitis.
On the morning of April 12, Roosevelt said, "I have a terrific headache." He was to never speak again. The doctor diagnosed that he had suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage.
