Yury Petrovich Vlasov was a Soviet and Russian heavyweight weightlifter, writer and politician. He competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics and won a gold medal in 1960 and a silver in 1964; at both games, he was the Olympic flag bearer for the Soviet Union. During his career, Vlasov won four world titles and set 31 ratified world records. He retired in 1968 and became a prominent writer and later a politician. He was a member of the Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union (1989) and then of the Russian State Duma (1993) and took part in the 1996 Russian presidential election. In February of 2021, Hollywood superstar and former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote a message on Twitter about the passing of Yuri Vlasov, who he called his inspiration when he was a young weightlifter. Vlasov’s life story explains why Schwarzenegger said that “it is because of people like him that I refuse to call myself self-made”. Arnold Schwarzenegger later made an impassioned online plea to Russians in March 2022, urging them to ignore the war “propaganda” spewed by the Kremlin and “spread truth” about the bleak reality of the unprovoked attack on Ukraine. In a nine-minute long video clip meant to slip through strict Moscow censors, Schwarzenegger, 74, also invoked his father’s experience fighting with the Nazis in World War II after the annexation of Austria — telling Russians his dad was “pumped up on the lies of his government” and lived the rest of his life in “guilt” and “pain.” The one-time Mr. Universe began by talking about his reverence for the Russian people, cemented when he met world champion weightlifter Yuri Petrovich Vlasov at the age of 14. Schwarzenegger told viewers that Moscow was lying to both the Russian public and troops about their mission to “denazify” Ukraine.

Rémy Julienne was a French driving stunt performer, stunt coordinator, assistant director and occasional actor. He was also a rallycross champion and 1956 French motorcross champion. He was a veteran of over 1,400 films. Notable large film projects in which he arranged stunts, consulted or manufactured special stunt cars include The Italian Job and six James Bond films, five of which were directed by John Glen and three with his sons Dominique and Michel. His career suffered a setback in 1999, when a stunt went wrong during the filming of Taxi 2, written and produced by Luc Besson and directed by Gérard Krawczyk, causing the death of a cameraman Alain Dutartre and the serious injury of the cameraman's assistant. Julienne accused the production company of taking short cuts in safety equipment, which Besson denied. The case wound up on September 11, 2007, with Julienne receiving an 18-month suspended jail sentence and a €13,000 fine. The prosecutor accused Julienne of "not taking all the necessary measures for the security of the stunt in question" and notably to have "neglected the speed calculations of the car and the length of the jump". Besson's firm EuropaCorp was initially cleared of all charges in 2007. Instead, Julienne, was held solely responsible for the botched scene. But the Paris Court of Appeal reversed the ruling in June 2009, and ordered EuropaCorp pay €100,000. Julienne's jail sentence was reduced to six months, and his fine was reduced from €13,000 to €2,000 but he was required to pay the Dutartre family €50,000 in court costs. EuropaCorp producers were criticised for rejecting Julienne's offers to trial the car scene in question for a price, which the stuntman claims would have prevented the tragedy.

Christopher Maboulou was a French-Congolese professional footballer who played as a winger or as a forward. On March 21, 2014, a controversy broke out about him during the meeting against SM Caen. While Caen leads 1-0 in the 94th minute of play, a free kick from Nasser Chamed is deflected from the hand by Christopher Maboulou. At first, the goal is awarded by referee Christian Guillard and then refused. The player and the staff are indignant at this decision, the referee validates the goal again, a scenario never seen in the history of French football. This controversy will have such an impact that Christopher Maboulou is taken in dislike by many chroniclers like Pierre Ménès who will accuse Maboulou of being "a cheater" and will be constantly hissed by all the other stadiums. Despite his official apologies, he will be suspended 3 games for his gesture. This gesture, which will not avoid the club's relegation to National, obscures his good season, which sees him participate in 32 league games (28 starts), score 10 goals and deliver 3 assists. He died of cardiac arrest during a match between friends in Montfermeil.

She was best known for playing Julie Rogers in the final season of the 1970's television series Charlie's Angels, Stacey Sutton in the James Bond film A View to a Kill, and Midge Pinciotti on That '70s Show. On December 24, 2020, Roberts fell out of bed and could not get up, following intestinal pain and breathing difficulties that began on a hike the day before. She was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles and was later placed on a ventilator. It was initially reported that Roberts died on January 3, 2021, after her partner, Lance O'Brien, told her manager that he had visited her in the hospital and "said goodbye". O'Brien later clarified that this was an end-of-life visit; he had not been permitted to see her during her hospitalization due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was invited to return when Roberts was taken off life support. She was critically ill from a urinary tract infection that entered her organs and bloodstream, leading to a blood infection made worse due to Roberts's history of hepatitis C. After the premature reports, O'Brien was informed by the hospital that she died in the evening of January 4, and confirmed this to the media on January 5.

David Charles Prowse MBE was an English bodybuilder, weightlifter and character actor in British film and television. Worldwide, he was best known for physically portraying Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy (with the character's voice being performed by James Earl Jones); in 2015, he starred in a documentary concerning that role, entitled I Am Your Father. Prior to his role as Vader, Prowse had established himself as a prominent figure in British culture as the first Green Cross Code man, a character used in British road safety advertising aimed at children. He had a role as Frank Alexander's bodyguard, Julian, in the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange, in which he was noticed by the future Star Wars director George Lucas. Prowse suffered from arthritis for much of his life. This led to replacements of both hips and his ankle being fused, as well as several revisionary surgeries on his hip replacements. Prowse's arthritic symptoms first appeared at age 13, but seemingly disappeared when he took up competitive weightlifting. However, they reappeared in 1990. In 2001, Prowse's left arm became paralysed, followed by his right. He was diagnosed with septic arthritis caused by an infection which nearly killed him. The amount of surgery he had was stated to have reduced his height from the 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm) of his younger days. Prowse worked with various arthritis organisations in Britain and was vice-president of the Physically Handicapped and Able-bodied Association. In March 2009, Prowse revealed that he was suffering from prostate cancer. From early 2009 he underwent radiation therapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital in South London. He discovered that he had the cancer following his participation in a charity event in aid of a prostate cancer charity, where a representative of the charity asked whether, as a man over 50, he had had a PSA test. The conversation stayed in his mind, and on a future visit to a general practitioner, he requested the blood test that eventually led to diagnosis. In 2009 he was said to be in remission. In November 2014, the Daily Mirror reported that Prowse had dementia. However, Prowse himself denied this, admitting instead he had problems with his memory, which he put down to age.

Stephen graduated in 1958 from Harvard University, where he once roomed with Paul Matisse, grandson of French impressionist painter Henri Matisse, and with Sadruddin Aga Khan. When the Central Bank of Ireland issued a ten euro James Joyce commemorative coin on 10 April 2013, Joyce described the coin and the circumstances of its issue as "one of the greatest insults to the Joyce family that has ever been perpetrated in Ireland". He complained of a lack of consultation over the coin; he objected to an error in a Joycean quotation inscribed on the coin; he was upset by the design of the portrait on the coin, calling it "the most unlikely likeness of Joyce ever produced"; and he described as highly insensitive and offensive the decision to issue the coin on the anniversary of the death of his grandmother, Nora Joyce, who died in 1951.
