Vlasov
Yury. 2021-02-13

Born 1935-12-05. Domain:Sport. Cause of death:Age

Yury Petrovich Vlasov was a Soviet and Russian heavyweight weightlifter, writer and politician. He competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics and won a gold medal in 1960 and a silver in 1964; at both games, he was the Olympic flag bearer for the Soviet Union. During his career, Vlasov won four world titles and set 31 ratified world records. He retired in 1968 and became a prominent writer and later a politician. He was a member of the Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union (1989) and then of the Russian State Duma (1993) and took part in the 1996 Russian presidential election. In February of 2021, Hollywood superstar and former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote a message on Twitter about the passing of Yuri Vlasov, who he called his inspiration when he was a young weightlifter. Vlasov’s life story explains why Schwarzenegger said that “it is because of people like him that I refuse to call myself self-made”. Arnold Schwarzenegger later made an impassioned online plea to Russians in March 2022, urging them to ignore the war “propaganda” spewed by the Kremlin and “spread truth” about the bleak reality of the unprovoked attack on Ukraine. In a nine-minute long video clip meant to slip through strict Moscow censors, Schwarzenegger, 74, also invoked his father’s experience fighting with the Nazis in World War II after the annexation of Austria — telling Russians his dad was “pumped up on the lies of his government” and lived the rest of his life in “guilt” and “pain.” The one-time Mr. Universe began by talking about his reverence for the Russian people, cemented when he met world champion weightlifter Yuri Petrovich Vlasov at the age of 14. Schwarzenegger told viewers that Moscow was lying to both the Russian public and troops about their mission to “denazify” Ukraine.

Suzuki
Seijun. 2017-02-13

93

Born 1923-05-24. Domain:Directing. Cause of death:Age

He was a Japanese filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter. His films are known for their jarring visual style, irreverent humour, nihilistic cool and entertainment-over-logic sensibility. He made 40 predominately B-movies for the Nikkatsu Company between 1956 and 1967, working most prolifically in the yakuza genre. His increasingly surreal style began to draw the ire of the studio in 1963 and culminated in his ultimate dismissal for what is now regarded as his magnum opus, Branded to Kill (1967), starring notable collaborator Joe Shishido. Suzuki successfully sued the studio for wrongful dismissal, but he was blacklisted for 10 years after that. As an independent filmmaker, he won critical acclaim and a Japanese Academy Award for his Taishō Trilogy, Zigeunerweisen (1980), Kagero-za (1981) and Yumeji (1991). His films remained widely unknown outside Japan until a series of theatrical retrospectives beginning in the mid-1980s, home video releases of key films such as Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter in the late 1990s and tributes by such acclaimed filmmakers as Jim Jarmusch, Takeshi Kitano, Wong Kar-wai and Quentin Tarantino signaled his international discovery. Suzuki continued making films, albeit sporadically. In Japan, he is more commonly recognized as an actor for his numerous roles in Japanese films and television. He died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Pierre Brambilla, 3rd of Tour de France 1947, used to talk to himself like that : « Tu vas avancer, vieille carcasse... Ah ! tu ne veux pas... Eh bien, tu ne boiras pas ! » Finally, beaten by thirst, he was drinking enormous quantity of liquid, that was too much compared with the normal capability of assimilation by the body (800 millilitres per hour). This gastric overload was limiting his respiratory function, slowing down his cell's oxygenation. Then, he believed that drinking a lot was bad for sporting performances.

Rejewski
Marian. 1980-02-13

Born 1905-08-16. Domain:Science (Math style). Cause of death:Heart attack

He was a Polish mathematician and cryptologist who reconstructed the sight-unseen Nazi German military Enigma cipher machine in 1932. The cryptologic achievements of Rejewski and colleagues Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski enabled the British to begin reading German Enigma-encrypted messages in the Second World War, seven years after Rejewski's original reconstruction of the machine. The intelligence that was gained by the British was code-named Ultra and contributed—perhaps decisively—to the defeat of Germany. He died at age 74 of a heart attack and was interred with military honors at Warsaw's Powązki Military Cemetery.

Hecke
Erich. 1947-02-13

60

Born 1887-09-20. Domain:Science (Math style). Cause of death:Cancer

He was a German mathematician. He obtained his doctorate in Göttingen under the supervision of David Hilbert. Kurt Reidemeister and Heinrich Behnke were among his students. His early work included establishing the functional equation for the Dedekind zeta function, with a proof based on theta functions. The method extended to the L-functions associated to a class of characters now known as Hecke characters or idele class characters; such L-functions are now known as Hecke L-functions. He devoted most of his research to the theory of modular forms, creating the general theory of cusp forms (holomorphic, for GL(2)), as it is now understood in the classical setting. During the war, he fell ill from cancer and had to be operated. To spare him the rigors of post-war Germany, his Danish friends invited him to Copenhagen, where he died in 1947.

Bersot
Lucien. 1915-02-13

34

Born 1881-06-07. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Murder

Lucien Bersot was executed February 13, 1915 and rehabilitated 12 July 1922. He was a French soldier among soldiers shot as an example during the First World War. His story was picked up by Alain Scoff and adapted to television by Yves Boisset. Shivering in the trenches, he asked the quartermaster sergeant wool pants identical to those worn by his comrades. The sergeant then offered him trousers ragged and stained with blood, taken from a dead soldier, that Bersot refused. For that refusal, Lucien Bersot was given a sentence of eight days in jail by Lt. André. But Lt. Col. Auroux, regimental commander, considered this insufficient punishment and required him to be trialed before a martial court. As new recruits had arrived, his intention was clearly to make an example of military discipline.

Bertillon
Alphonse. 1914-02-13

61

Born 1853-04-22. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Age

He was a French police officer and biometrics researcher who applied the anthropological technique of anthropometry to law enforcement creating an identification system based on physical measurements. Anthropometry was the first scientific system used by police to identify criminals. Before that time, criminals could only be identified by name or photograph. The method was eventually supplanted by fingerprinting. He is also the inventor of the mug shot. Photographing of criminals began in the 1840s only a few years after the invention of photography, but it was not until 1888 that Bertillon standardized the process. Bertillon was a witness for the prosecution in the Dreyfus affair in 1894 and again in 1899. He testified as a handwriting expert and claimed that Alfred Dreyfus had written the incriminating document (known as the "bordereau"). However, he was not a handwriting expert, and his convoluted and flawed evidence was a significant contributing factor to one of the most infamous miscarriages of justice—-the condemnation of the innocent Dreyfus to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. Using a complex system of measurements, he attempted to prove that Dreyfus had disguised his handwriting by imitating his own handwriting as if someone else was doing so, so that if anyone thought the bordereau was in Dreyfus's hand, he would be able to say that someone else had forged his writing. Both courts martial evidently accepted this, and Dreyfus was convicted. The verdict of the second court martial caused a huge scandal, and it was eventually overturned. Bertillon was by many accounts regarded as extremely eccentric. According to Maurice Paleologue, who observed him at the second court-martial, Bertillon was "certainly not in full possession of his faculties". Paleologue goes on to describe Bertillon's argument as "a long tissue of absurdities.
