Scott was found dead by her assistant at her apartment in Chelsea, Manhattan, around 10 a.m. on March 17, 2014. The police reported that no note was found and there was no sign of foul play. The New York City Chief Medical Examiner determined Scott's manner and cause of death to be suicide by hanging. She was 49. Scott's funeral service was held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. She left her entire estate, estimated at about US$9 million, to her longtime boyfriend, Mick Jagger.

Demjanjuk
John (alias: Ivan The Terrible). 2012-03-17

91

Born 1920-04-03. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Age

He was a man who was convicted as a war criminal. Demjanjuk's conviction was pending appeal at the time of his death. Demjanjuk was born in the Ukrainian People's Republic, 2 years before it was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR. He emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1952 and was granted citizenship in 1958, when he formally anglicized his name from "Ivan" to "John". In 1986 he was deported to Israel to stand trial for war crimes, after being identified by Israeli Holocaust survivors as "Ivan the Terrible", a notorious guard at the Treblinka and Sobibor extermination camps. Demjanjuk was accused of committing murder and acts of extraordinarily savage violence against camp prisoners during 1942–43. He was convicted of having committed crimes against humanity and sentenced to death there in 1988. The verdict was overturned by the Israeli Supreme Court in 1993 due to a finding of reasonable doubt based on evidence suggesting that this was a case of mistaken identity, that Demjanjuk was not "Ivan the Terrible". After the trial, in September 1993, he returned to his home in Ohio. His citizenship was reinstated in 1998 after a federal appeals court in Washington ruled that prosecutors had deliberately suppressed evidence related to whether he was Ivan the Terrible. In 2001 Demjanjuk was charged again, this time on the grounds that he had served as a guard at the Sobibor and Majdanek camps in occupied Poland and at the Flossenbürg camp in Germany. His deportation was again ordered in 2005, but after exhausting his appeals in 2008 he still remained in the United States, as no country would agree to accept him at that time. On 2 April 2009, it was announced that Demjanjuk would be deported to Germany, where he would stand trial. On 11 May, Demjanjuk left his Cleveland home by ambulance, and was taken to the airport, where he was deported by plane, arriving in Germany the next morning. On 13 July, he was formally charged with 27,900 counts of acting as an accessory to murder, one for each person who died at Sobibor during the time he served as a guard. On 30 November, Demjanjuk's trial began in Munich. It concluded on 12 May 2011, when he was convicted as an accessory to the murder of 27,900 Jews and sentenced to five years in prison. He was later released pending appeal, and lived at a German nursing home in Bad Feilnbach, where he died at age 91.

Cohen
Bernard Leonard. 2012-03-17

87

Born 1924-06-14. Domain:Science (Physics style). Cause of death:Age

He was born in Pittsburgh, and was Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Pittsburgh. Professor Cohen was a staunch opponent to the so called Linear no-threshold model (LNT) which postulates there exists no safe threshold for radiation exposure. His views, what was in the 1980s and 1990s considered a self-marginalizing posture had gained within 20 years support from a strong minority. He claimed: "All estimates of the cancer risk from low level radiation are based on the linear-no threshold theory (LNT) which is based solely on largely discredited concepts of radiation carcinogenesis, with no experimental verification in the low dose region of the most important applications. These risk estimates are now leading to the expenditure of tens of billions of dollars to protect against dangers whose existence is highly questionable. It is therefore of utmost importance to test the validity of this theory." When Ralph Nader described plutonium as "the most toxic substance known to mankind", Cohen, then a tenured professor, offered to consume on camera as much plutonium oxide as Nader could consume of caffeine, the stimulant found in coffee and other beverages, which in its pure form has an oral(LD50) of 192 milligrams per kilogram in rats.

Born 1897-09-12. Domain:Science (Physics style). Cause of death:cancer (blood)

The years of working so closely with deadly materials finally caught up with Irène and, like her mother, she was diagnosed with leukaemia. She had been accidentally exposed to polonium when a sealed capsule of the element exploded on her laboratory bench. Treatment with antibiotics and a series of operations did relieve her suffering temporarily but her condition continued to deteriorate. Despite this Irène continued to work and in 1955 drew up plans for new physics laboratories at the Universitie d’Orsay, South of Paris. In 1956, after a final convalescent period in the French Alps Irène was admitted to the Curie hospital in Paris where she died from leukemia.
