Devaquet
Alain. 2018-01-19

75

Born 1942-10-04. Domain:Politics. Cause of death:Cancer

Alain Devaquet was a French politician who was a minister under Jacques Chirac. A university professor before embarking on his political career with the Rally for the Republic, Devaquet was given the role of junior minister for universities. In this role he became the public face of a controversial proposal to reform the higher education system in 1986, the proposals becoming known as the Devaquet Law, despite originating from more senior members of the government. The plan allowed universities to be more selective in the admission of students and to charge fees. The reaction against the proposals was strong, with mass protests by students and some strikes in support of their opposition. With the mobilisation of students also closely linked to other proposals aimed at tightening immigration laws, things came to a head with the death of Malik Oussekine, a student protester who died in police custody on 6 December 1986 and whose death prompted mass outpouring of anger. The law was withdrawn two days later and Devaquet was forced to resign, although the incident proved a strong blow to the government and enhanced the profile of François Mitterrand due to his opposition.

Dupré
Guy. 2018-01-17

89

Born 1928-02-27. Domain:Writing. Cause of death:Age

Guy Dupré was a French writer and publisher. Dupré published three novels, two books of memoirs and a collection of chronicles, but the unity of his style and his writing unconcerned with traditional genres makes the same voice heard from one book to the other. At the time of its publication (1953), his first work, Les Fiancées sont froides, was hailed by Albert Béguin, André Breton, and Julien Gracq. This poetic and initiatory account, with its rather obscure intrigue, bears the imprint of German Romanticism. Plotting a fugitive hussar in the time of the Napoleonic wars, it is set on the shores of the Baltic Sea and is not without evoking Le Coup de Grâce (1939) by Marguerite Yourcenar. The subject and the style of the book earned Dupré to be attached to the movement of the Hussards. Guy Dupré joined the publishing house Plon, which has long specialized in military memorabilia. He prepared a biography of General Charles Mangin that was never completed but whose face would appear in Le Grand coucher. He made an anthology of Maurice Barrès (Mes Cahiers, Plon, 1962), an anthology of the Chroniques de la Grande Guerre of the same (Plon, 1968), as well as the cross-correspondence between Maurice Barrès and Charles Maurras: La République ou le Roi, correspondance 1888-1923, Plon, 1970. Close to novelist Jean Parvulesco, he wrote the preface for his L'Étoile de l'Empire invisible (Guy Trédaniel, 1994).

He was a British actor best known for playing the character Jason King, a bestselling novelist turned sleuth, in two television series: Department S (1969–70) and Jason King (1971–72). His flamboyant dress sense and stylish performances led to success, and he was considered a style icon in Britain and elsewhere in the early 1970s; Mike Myers credited Wyngarde with inspiring the character Austin Powers. Peter Wyngarde's birth name, Cyril Goldbert, was confirmed when details of his estate were published in The London Gazette on 2 May 2019. His full name may have been Cyril Louis Goldbert, but facts about his early life are difficult to confirm and verify. Wyngarde appears to have fabricated a false biography when he changed his name, including a later year of birth, a father with a different name, profession and ethnic background, and a false education history. The Guardian said in March 2020 that "his life story is shrouded in mystery" According to his own account, he was born on 23 August 1933 to a French mother and a British father at an aunt's home in Marseille, France. A 1956 Straits Times article about his mother gives Marseille as his birthplace. He claimed to be a maternal nephew of French actor-director Louis Jouvet.
