Gardner
Martin. 2010-05-22

95

Born 1914-10-21. Domain:Science (Math style). Cause of death:Age

For over a quarter century (1956-1981), Gardner wrote a monthly column on the subject of "recreational mathematics" for Scientific American. It all began with his free-standing article on hexaflexagons which ran in the December 1956 issue. The SA editor suggested he write a regular feature and the January 1957 issue contained his first column, entitled Mathematical Games. The columns were first collected in book form in 1959 as The Scientific American Book of Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions. Fourteen more followed over the next four decades. In the 1980s the column began to appear only irregularly. Other authors began to share the column and the May 1986 issue saw the final installment under that title. Gardner was famously shy and declined many honors when he learned that a public appearance would be required if he accepted. (He once told Colm Mulcahy that he "never gave a lecture in his life and that he wouldn't know how to.") However, in 1993 Atlanta puzzle collector Tom Rodgers persuaded Gardner to attend an evening devoted to Gardner's puzzle-solving efforts. The gathering was repeated in 1996, again with Gardner in attendance, which convinced Rodgers and his friends to make the gathering a regular event. It has been held since then in even-numbered years near Atlanta, and the program consists of any topic which could have been touched by Gardner during his writing career. The event is called "Gathering for Gardner", and is written "G4Gn", with n being replaced by the number of the event (the 2010 event thus was G4G9). Gardner only attended the 1993 and 1996 events. Gardner's wife died in 2000 and two years later he returned to Norman, Oklahoma where his son, James Gardner, was a professor of education at the University of Oklahoma. He died there

The 79-year-old Culp often went hiking at Runyon Canyon, a park near his Hollywood Hills apartment. On the morning of March 24, 2010 Culp left the apartment to go for a walk. A jogger found him lying on the sidewalk near the lower entrance of Runyon Canyon. Police and paramedics were summoned, but were unable to revive him. Culp was declared dead at a little after 11:00am at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. Although initial police reports indicated that Culp died from striking his head when he fell, it was later determined that he collapsed and died due to a massive heart attack. The only injury from the fall was a minor cut on his head.

He was a German mathematician. His father Hellmuth Kneser and grandfather Adolf Kneser were also mathematicians. He obtained his PhD in 1950 from Humboldt University of Berlin with the dissertation: Über den Rand von Parallelkörpern. His advisor was Erhard Schmidt. His name has been given to Kneser graphs which he studied in 1955. He also gave a simplified proof of the Fundamental theorem of algebra. His main publications were on quadratic forms and algebraic groups. In graph theory, the Kneser graph KGn,k is the graph whose vertices correspond to the k-element subsets of a set of n elements, and where two vertices are adjacent if and only if the two corresponding sets are disjoint. Kneser graphs are named after Martin Kneser, who first investigated them in 1955.

Kamen
Martin. 2002-08-31

89

Born 1913-08-27. Domain:Science (Physics style). Cause of death:Age

He was co-discoverer (with Sam Ruben) of the isotope carbon-14 on February 27, 1940, at the University of California Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley.
Kamen was a target and victim of American anti-communist fervor in the 1940s and 1950s. He described his experiences during this era in his autobiography, Radiant Science, Dark Politics. He first aroused suspicion while working at Oak Ridge. A cyclotron operator prepared radioactive sodium for an experiment, and Kamen was surprised that the resulting sodium had a purple glow, indicating it was much more intensely radioactive than could be produced in a cyclotron. Kamen recognized immediately that the sodium must have been irradiated in a nuclear reactor elsewhere in the facility. Because of wartime secrecy, he had not been aware of the reactor's existence. He excitedly told his colleagues about his discovery. Shortly thereafter, an investigation was launched to find out who had leaked the information to Kamen.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities summoned Kamen to testify in 1948. A Congressional investigation established that Russians had received classified information from Kamen concerning uranium stockpiles. Subsequently the State Department refused to issue him a passport. In 1951 the Chicago Tribune named him as a suspected spy. Kamen attempted suicide. After a 10-year effort to establish his innocence and prove that he had been blacklisted as a security risk, he won a libel suit against the Tribune in 1955 and was able once again to obtain a passport.

Crocetti
Dino (alias: Dean Martin). 1995-12-25

78

Born 1917-06-07. Domain:Music. Cause of death:Cancer (lung)

At his side in his last years was ex-wife Jeannie (Bieggers) Martin, whom he had divorced years earlier. The pair became close again, although they resisted suggestions that they wed and seemed content to just being together.
Martin died of respiratory failure, at home with Jeannie by his side, on Christmas morning 1995.
Martin's world began to crumble on March 21, 1987, when his son Dean Paul Martin was killed when his jet fighter crashed while flying with the Air National Guard. A much-touted tour with Davis and Sinatra in 1988 sputtered, with Martin's heart just not into it. On one occasion, he infuriated Sinatra when he turned to him and muttered "Frank, what the hell are we doing up here?" Martin, who always responded best to a club audience, felt lost in the huge stadiums they were performing in (at Sinatra's insistence), and he was not the least bit interested in drinking until dawn after their performances.
In fact, Martin never completely recovered from losing his son, and as a lifelong smoker was suffering from emphysema. In September 1993, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He courageously kept his private life to himself, emerging briefly for a public celebration of his 77th birthday with friends and family.

Ritt
Martin. 1990-12-08

76

Born 1914-03-02. Domain:Directing. Cause of death:Age

Ritt's 1964 film The Outrage, is an American retelling of the Kurosawa film Rashomon, and stars Laurence Harvey, Paul Newman, Claire Bloom, Edward G. Robinson, Howard Da Silva, and William Shatner. The film uses the Western genre to tell the same story as the Japanese movie. Like the original Kurosawa film, this film contrasts the stories of various witnesses to a crime. Shatner and Robinson listen to four different versions of a rape/murder, told alternatively by Harvey, Bloom, Newman and Da Silva. Harvey is the one murdered, but tells his story through an Indian medicine man. Each story is a biased opinion of what happened, and the movie never resolves which story is true (if any). Like the Kurosawa original, Ritt's film is an example of nonlinear storytelling.
