R I P of the day

Whittle Frank (b. 1907-06-01 / d. 1996-08-09)

Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle was a British Royal Air Force (RAF) engineer officer. He is credited with independently inventing the turbojet engine (some years earlier than Germany's Dr. Hans von Ohain) and is regarded by many as the father of jet propulsion. Von Ohain allegedly stated that if the RAF had taken Whittle's design seriously when it was first submitted, there would have been no World War II. As it was found later in the war the fighter superiority over Europe was key to winning the war in Europe.

Barre
Raymond. 2007-08-25

83

Born 1924-04-12. Domain:Politics. Cause of death:Kidney failure

On several occasions, Raymond Barre made remarks that were interpreted as antisemitic, or at least supportive of antisemitism. In 1980, when he was Prime minister, a bombing was attempted against a synagogue in the rue Copernic in Paris; however the bomb detonated in the street when the Jews attending shabbat were inside the synagogue, and not when they were out; as a result only some non-Jewish bystanders were killed. Raymond Barre then famously denounced:
"A hateful attack which wanted to strike at the Jews who were in that synagogue, and which [instead] struck innocent French people who were crossing the street."
A controversy erupted because Raymond Barre's sentence seemed to imply that the Jews inside the synagogue were guilty of something, or were not French.
On February 5, 2005, Raymond Barre declared about Bruno Gollnisch, one of the leaders of the controversial Front National party
"Gollnisch is a likeable person, he gets sometimes carried away by outrageous speech, but he's a good person."
His parents separated when he was 4-year old. This was the last time he saw his father. Though his father died in 1975, in Paris, Raymond Barre had never seen him again.

Barrett
Roger (alias: Syd Barrett). 2006-07-07

60

Born 1946-01-06. Domain:Music. Cause of death:cancer (pancreas)

There has been much speculation concerning the psychological well-being of Syd Barrett. Many believe he suffered from schizophrenia, although he didn't exactly fit the typical profile for that condition. A diagnosis of bipolar disorder is also possible, most likely Bipolar I. In addition there have been many ongoing speculations that Syd Barrett suffered from Asperger syndrome (a mild form of Autism)
David Gilmour proposed, in an interview with the National Post's John Geiger, that the stroboscopic lights used in their shows combined with the drugs could have had a seriously detrimental effect on Barrett's mental health if he was a photo-epileptic who suffered partial seizures. When partial seizures occur in the temporal lobes patients are often misdiagnosed with schizophrenia or psychosis.
His sister denied he was a recluse or that he was vague about his past: "Roger may have been a bit selfish — or rather self-absorbed — but when people called him a recluse they were really only projecting their own disappointment. He knew what they wanted but he wasn’t willing to give it to them." Barrett, she said, took up photography, and sometimes they went to the seaside together. "Quite often he took the train on his own to London to look at the major art collections — and he loved flowers. He made regular trips to the Botanic Gardens and to the dahlias at Anglesey Abbey, near Lode. But of course, his passion was his painting", she said.

Adler Berriman "Barry" Seal was a commercial airline pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel. When Seal was convicted of smuggling charges, he became an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration and testified in several major drug trials. He was murdered in 1986 by contract killers hired by the cartel. On the evening of February 19, 1986, Seal was shot to death in front of the Salvation Army Center, three weeks into his probation. When Seal pulled into the house's lot and parked, a man got out of a car behind the center's donation drop boxes and opened fire with a suppressed MAC-10 machine gun. Seal was hit six times and died instantly. Six Colombians were quickly arrested in connection with the murder. Three of them, Luis Carlos Quintero-Cruz, Miguel Vélez, and Bernardo Antonio Vásquez, were indicted on state charges for capital murder. A fourth man was indicted separately on lesser charges, and evidence of direct involvement was insufficient for two, who were released and deported. In addition to the state charges against the killers, federal charges were filed against Fabio Ochoa, Pablo Escobar, and a third cartel member, Rafael Cardona, for conspiring to violate Seal's civil rights by murdering him.

Gig Young (born Byron Elsworth Barr) was an American actor. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). On October 19, 1978, three weeks after his marriage to Schmidt, the couple were found dead in their Manhattan apartment. Police surmised that Young shot his wife and then himself. A motive for the murder–suicide was never discovered. Police said there was a diary opened to September 27 with "we got married today" written on it. The couple appear to have died around 2:30 pm, and their bodies were found five hours later. Young was at one time under the care of the psychologist and psychotherapist Eugene Landy, who later had his professional California medical license revoked amidst accusations of ethical violations and misconduct with patients.

Barrymore
John. 1942-05-29

60

Born 1882-02-15. Domain:Performing. Cause of death:cirrhosis of the liver

Barrymore collapsed while appearing on a radio show and died some days later in his hospital room. His dying words were "Die? I should say not, dear fellow. No Barrymore would allow such a conventional thing to happen to him." Gene Fowler attributes different dying words to Barrymore in his biography Good Night, Sweet Prince. According to Fowler, John Barrymore roused as if to say something to his brother Lionel; Lionel asked John to repeat himself, and John simply replied, "You heard me, Mike."
In the late 1930s, alcoholism and possibly Alzheimer's Disease encroached on his ability to remember his lines, and his diminished abilities were apparent in an surviving screen test that he made for an aborted film of Hamlet in 1934. From then on, he insisted on reading his dialogue from cue cards. He continued to give creditable performances in lesser pictures, for example as Inspector Nielson in some of Paramount Pictures' Bulldog Drummond mysteries, and offered one last bravura dramatic turn in RKO's 1939 feature The Great Man Votes.

Barrow
Clyde. 1934-05-23

25

Born 1909-03-24. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Murder

In the famous "Eastham Breakout" of 1934, Clyde's lifetime goal appeared to come true, as he masterminded the escape of Henry Methvin, Raymond Hamilton and several others. The Texas Department of Corrections received national negative publicity over the jailbreak, and Clyde appeared to have achieved what Phillips describes as the burning passion in his life — revenge on the Texas Department of Corrections. It was an expensive revenge, for all concerned, as the killing of a guard (by Joe Palmer) brought the full power of the Texas and federal governments to bear on the manhunt for Bonnie and Clyde, ultimately resulting in their deaths. As the guard, Major Crowson, lay dying, Lee Simmons of the Texas Department of Corrections reportedly promised him every person involved in the breakout would be hunted down and killed
Manhunter Frank Hamer organized an ambush to get the gang.
the lawmen opened fire, killing Bonnie and Clyde while shooting a combined total of approximately 130 rounds. By 9:15, the couple were dead. The posse, under Hamer's direct orders, did not call out a warning, or order the duo to surrender. Clyde was killed instantly from Oakley's initial head shot. Bonnie did not die as easily as Clyde. The posse reported her uttering a long, horrified scream as the bullets tore into the car. The officers emptied the specially-ordered automatic rifle, as well as rifles, shotguns and pistols at the car.
Some sources say Bonnie and Clyde were shot more than 50 times, while other sources claim a total closer to 25 bullet wounds per corpse, or fifty total.
Bonnie and Clyde wished to be buried side by side, but the Parker family would not allow it.
Clyde Barrow is buried in the Western Heights Cemetery, and Bonnie Parker in the Crown Hill Memorial Park, both in Dallas, Texas.
