Baire René-Louis (b. 1874-01-21 / d. 1932-07-05)

René-Louis Baire was a French mathematician most famous for his Baire category theorem, which helped to generalize and prove future theorems. His theory was published originally in his dissertation Sur les fonctions de variable réelles ("On the Functions of Real Variables") in 1899. Since he was young, Baire always had "delicate" health. He had developed problems with his esophagus before he attended school and he would occasionally experience severe attacks of agoraphobia. From time to time, his health would prevent him from working or studying. The bad spells became more frequent, immobilizing him for long periods of time. Over time, he had developed a kind of psychological disorder that made him unable to undertake work that required long periods of concentration. At times this would make his ability to research mathematics impossible. Between 1909 and 1914 this problem continually plagued him and his teaching duties became more and more difficult. He was given a leave of absence from the University of Dijon due to all these breakdowns. He retired from Dijon in 1925 and spent his last years living in multiple hotels that he could afford with his meager pension.

Soulages

Born 1919-12-24. Domain:Painting. Cause of death:Age

Pierre Soulages was a French painter, printmaker, and sculptor. In 2014, François Hollande described him as "the world's greatest living artist." Soulages is known as "the painter of black," owing to his interest in the colour "both as a colour and a non-colour. When light is reflected on black, it transforms and transmutes it. It opens a mental field all its own." He saw light as a work material; striations of the black surface of his paintings enable him to reflect light, allowing the black to come out of darkness and into brightness, thus becoming a luminous colour.

Born 1947-12-27. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Age

Jacqueline Sauvage of Montargis, France, killed her husband Norbert Marot by shooting him in the back three times with a hunting rifle on 10 September 2012. This occurred the day after Sauvage's son committed suicide. Sauvage stated that Mr Marot had physically and sexually abused his wife, daughters and possibly his son. A criminal case was then filed against Mrs. Sauvage, that resulted in her being condemned to ten years in jail by a cour d'assises. She then filed an appeal motion, but the verdict remains unchanged, pronounced on 3 December 2015. On 31 January 2016, the French president François Hollande announced his giving a partial presidential pardon to Mrs Sauvage. This results in a reduction of her jail time of two years and nine months. On 28 December 2016, M. Hollande pronounced a full pardon, announced both on his personal Twitter account and by a release made by the Elysée. This decision led to Mrs Sauvage’s immediate release from the detention centre of Réau.

O Brien
Mary (alias: Dusty Springfield). 1999-03-02

59

Born 1939-04-16. Domain:Music. Cause of death:Cancer (breast)

Many stories abound as to the origins of the names but certainly Dusty herself is quoted as saying that hers was the nickname given her by school friends because she was such a tomboy and loved playing football out in the streets with the boys! The ‘explanation’ for the name ‘Springfields’ comes from the anecdote that they used to rehearse in fields during the spring.
1993 saw the release of the ‘Heart and Soul’ single with Cilla Black to celebrate the latter’s 30 years in the music business and this was followed by what turned out to be Dusty’s last album, ‘A Very Fine Love’. She had for a long time nurtured the desire to return to Nashville. As part of the Springfields all those years previous, she had been asked to stay – it was almost like returning home for her. Nearing the completion of the recording, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. The album was released in 1995 after Dusty had been given the all clear. The last live television appearance that Dusty made was on the show ‘Later With Jools Holland’ where, accompanied by Alison Moyet and Sinead O’Connor amongst others, she sang the track ‘Where Is A Woman To Go'.
Dusty’s cancer returned and was diagnosed as terminal. She moved to Henley-on-Thames and was able to spend some peaceful times looking out over the garden at the ‘pretty things’ which she always aspired to do.

O'Flahertie Wills Wilde
Oscar Fingan (alias: Oscar Wilde). 1900-11-30

46

Born 1854-10-16. Domain:Writing. Cause of death:Infection

Wilde made a complaint of criminal libel against Lord Alfred Douglas's father, the ninth Marquess of Queensberry, for leaving him a calling card at his club. The offending card read "For Oscar Wilde, posing Somdomite [sic]". The Marquess was arrested and later freed on bail.
The Marqueese decided to counter-attack. On May 25, 1895 Wilde was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labour. His conviction angered some observers, one of whom demanded, in a published letter, "Why does not the Crown prosecute every boy at a public or private school or half the men in the Universities?" in reference to the presumed pederastic proclivities of English upper class men.
Prison was unkind to Wilde's health and after he was released on May 19, 1897 he spent his last three years penniless, in self-imposed exile from society and artistic circles. He went under the assumed name of Sebastian Melmoth, after the famously "penetrated" Saint Sebastian and the devilish central character of Wilde's great-uncle Charles Robert Maturin's gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer.
Wilde died of cerebral meningitis. Different opinions are given on the cause of the meningitis; Richard Ellmann claimed it was syphilitic; Merlin Holland, Wilde's grandson, thought this to be a misconception, noting that Wilde's meningitis followed a surgical intervention, perhaps a mastoidectomy; Wilde's physicians, Dr. Paul Cleiss and A'Court Tucker, reported that the condition stemmed from an old suppuration of the right ear (une ancienne suppuration de l'oreille droite d'ailleurs en traitement depuis plusieurs années) and did not allude to syphilis. Most modern scholars and doctors agree that syphilis was unlikely to have been the cause of his death.
