Born 1932-02-15. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Age

Stephen James Joyce was the grandson of James Joyce and the executor of Joyce's literary estate. He was born in France, the son of James Joyce's son, Giorgio, and Helen Joyce (née Kastor). Stephen graduated in 1958 from Harvard University, where he once roomed with Paul Matisse, grandson of French impressionist painter Henri Matisse, and with Sadruddin Aga Khan. When the Central Bank of Ireland issued a ten euro James Joyce commemorative coin on 10 April 2013, Joyce described the coin and the circumstances of its issue as "one of the greatest insults to the Joyce family that has ever been perpetrated in Ireland". He complained of a lack of consultation over the coin; he objected to an error in a Joycean quotation inscribed on the coin; he was upset by the design of the portrait on the coin, calling it "the most unlikely likeness of Joyce ever produced"; and he described as highly insensitive and offensive the decision to issue the coin on the anniversary of the death of his grandmother, Nora Joyce, who died in 1951.

Born 1929-11-21. Domain:Writing. Cause of death:Age

French's 1977 novel, The Women's Room, follows the lives of Mira and her friends in 1950s and 60s America, including Val, a militant radical feminist. The novel portrays the details of the lives of women at this time and also the feminist movement of this era in the United States. At one point in the book the character Val says "all men are rapists". This quote has often been incorrectly attributed to Marilyn French herself. French's first book was a thesis on James Joyce.
French survived esophageal cancer. This experience was the basis for her book A Season in Hell: A Memoir (1998).
She was also mentioned in the 1982 ABBA song, "The Day Before You Came." The lyrics that mentioned French were: "I must have read a while, the latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style".
French died from heart failure.

Born 1928-09-05. Domain:Music. Cause of death:Cancer

She was a British pianist and piano teacher whose performing career spanned some twenty-five years, coming to an end in the mid-1970s. Late in her life, recordings released under her name won considerable critical acclaim, but after her death it was discovered that many of these recordings were taken from CDs recorded by other performers. On 26 February 2007, Gramophone Magazine published a confession from Hatto's husband-producer, admitting his sole responsibility in falsely passing off others' works as hers. His version of events has not been universally accepted.

The sinthome is a concept introduced by Jacques Lacan in his seminar Le sinthome (1975-76). According to Lacan, sinthome is an archaic way of spelling the French word symptôme, meaning symptom. The seminar is a continuing elaboration of his topology, extending the previous seminar's focus (RSI) on the Borromean Knot and an exploration of the writings of James Joyce. Lacan redefines the psychoanalytic symptom in terms of his topology of the subject.

Born 1880-04-03. Domain:Philosophy. Cause of death:Suicide

Otto Weininger was an Austrian philosopher who lived in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1903, he published the book Geschlecht und Charakter (Sex and Character), which gained popularity after his suicide at the age of 23. Parts of his work were adapted for use by the Nazi regime (which at the same time denounced him). Weininger had a strong influence on Ludwig Wittgenstein, August Strindberg, Julius Evola, and, via his lesser-known work Über die letzten Dinge, on James Joyce. On 4 October Weininger was found mortally wounded, having shot himself in the chest. He died in the Wiener Allgemeines Krankenhaus (Vienna General Hospital) and was buried in the Matzleinsdorf Protestant Cemetery in Vienna.
