Born 1921-07-08. Domain:Science (Physics style). Cause of death:Age

He was a French scientist and educator, known for his major contribution to the development of the University of Grenoble in the years following the Second World War. He is also known for his early work on nuclear magnetic resonance, centimetre wavelength radiation (microwaves) and electron spin resonance. He graduated from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), and, on completing his thesis, was invited by Louis Néel to a post at the University of Grenoble, where he established the Laboratoire de Spectrométrie Physique. Both men, Néel and Soutif, understood the importance of the relationship between industry and fundamental research, and of the consequent need to attract new industries to the surrounding region. Soutif's success in obtaining teaching posts and in reinforcing the discipline of physics at the University of Grenoble was remarkable. He is recognized not only for his scientific achievements but also for the outstanding clarity of his teaching and his mission to spread scientific reason. These were talents that, in the positions of responsibility and decision that he occupied during his career, propelled him to become one of the principal architects of the growth of the University.

Born 1904-09-22. Domain:Science (Medical/Bio style). Cause of death:Age

He claimed to be listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest practicing surgeon.
Uglov was a pioneer of many new international trends in surgery, especially with regard to the operations on the lungs and heart. His book, “The Surgeon’s Heart,” became a bestseller. The legendary surgeon had performed more than 6,500 operations.
The surgeon, whose motto was “there are no completely hopeless situations, and there should always be a way out,” will be remembered as being fearless by his colleagues. Often he took on board cases that his colleagues considered hopeless, and completed the operations successfully.
In a much-discussed case when he was performing an operation during the Siege of Leningrad during World War II, a shell exploded outside the window and the shock wave sent glass fragments flying into the room. Without thinking of his own safety, Uglov bent over the patient to protect the wound. When the nurse told the surgeon that the explosion had made her drop the only clean scalpel on to the floor, Uglov did not hesitate and completed the operation with a razor.

Marks
Leopold Samuel. 2001-01-15

80

Born 1920-09-24. Domain:Science (Math style). Cause of death:Cancer

Leo Marks was an English cryptographer, screenwriter and playwright. “ In January 1942 I was escorted to the war by my parents in case I couldn't find it or met with an accident on the way. ” So begins his book, Between Silk and Cyanide, about his work in cryptography. Marks joined the Armed Services and went to Bedford to train as a cryptographer. Although personally in charge only of agent codes, the young Marks frequently walked into bureaucratic lion's dens in order to save lives in the field. One of his first challenges (stubbornly resisted by the establishment) was to phase out the use of double transposition ciphers using keys based on preselected poems. These poem ciphers had the limited advantage of being easy to memorise, but a number of significant disadvantages, including limited cryptographic security, substantial minimum message sizes (short ones were hopelessly easy to crack), and the fact that the method's complexity caused a significant number of encoding errors. Cryptographic security was greatly enhanced by Marks's innovations, especially "worked-out keys". He was widely credited with inventing the letter one-time pad, but while he did independently discover the method, he would later find that it was already in use at Bletchley. While attempting to relegate poem codes to emergency use only, he enhanced their security by promoting the use of original poems in preference to widely known ones, thus forcing a would-be cracker to work it out the hard way for each message instead of being able to guess an agent's entire set of keys after breaking the key to a single message (or possibly even just part of the key.) Something of a poet himself, Marks wrote many poems later used by agents, the most famous being the one he gave to the agent Violette Szabo, the poignant The Life That I Have, which gained popularity when it was used in the 1958 film about her, Carve Her Name With Pride. According to his book, Marks wrote the poem about a girlfriend, Ruth Hambro, who was killed in an air crash in Canada. The life that I have is all that I have And the life that I have is yours The love that I have of the life that I have Is yours and yours and yours. A sleep I shall have, a rest I shall have Yet death will be but a pause For the peace of my years in the long green grass Will be yours and yours and yours.

Lee
Brandon. 1993-03-31

28

Born 1965-01-02. Domain:Performing. Cause of death:Accident

Bruce Lee's son.
On March 31, 1993, the 52nd day of a 60-day shooting schedule for The Crow, the scene being filmed involved Lee's character walking into his apartment and discovering his girlfriend being raped by thugs. This would subsequently lead to Eric being brutally killed, along with his girlfriend, by the thugs. Actor Michael Massee, who played one of the villains named Funboy in the movie, was supposed to fire a gun at Lee as he walked into his apartment with groceries.
Because the movie's second unit team were running behind schedule, it was decided that dummy cartridges would be made from real cartridges, which had been brought to the set earlier in production. Bruce Merlin, an effects technician, dismantled the live cartridges by removing the bullets, emptying out the gunpowder, detonating the primer and reinserting the bullets. This rendered the cartridges inoperative but realistic in appearance. Merlin and his propmaster, Daniel Kuttner, took initiative to create some blanks by removing live cartridges and replacing the gunpowder with firework powder; the bullets were not reinserted.
Later, a cartridge with only a primer and a bullet was fired in a pistol; this caused the bullet to lodge in the forcing cone of the revolver. When the first unit used this gun to shoot the death scene, the chamber was loaded with blanks which had no bullets. However, there was still the bullet in the barrel, which was propelled out by the blank cartridge's explosion. Consequently, Lee was shot and severely wounded as cameras were rolling at the Carolco Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina. Seconds later, director Alex Proyas stopped the scene, but Lee remained on the floor. Stuntman (and Lee's friend) Jeff Imada ran over to him with a paramedic, and discovered a thin slit an inch below to the right of his navel. By this time, Lee had slipped into unconsciousness and was rushed to the hospital where doctors discovered that a bullet was the cause of the damage. They fought for five hours in an attempt to save him, but at 1:04 PM he was pronounced dead.

Hexum
Jon-Erik. 1984-10-18

26

Born 1957-11-05. Domain:Performing. Cause of death:Accident

He was an American actor and model who died accidentally shortly after a firearms incident on the set of Cover Up, a television series in which he was a central cast member.
In between filming scenes on the set of Cover Up, Hexum was critically wounded after he placed a .44 Magnum prop gun loaded with blanks to his temple and pulled the trigger. The accident happened during the filming of a scene where Hexum’s character (Mac Harper) was supposed to unload a handgun and replace the bullets with blanks – as the script required. However, the shooting was delayed and Hexum – being overworked and tired due to his tight filming schedule and various TV appearances fell asleep. Hexum awoke, realizing that the scene still was not ready to be shot, and put the gun to his head. Of all the crewmembers in the studio that day, no one claims to have seen the shooting.
Hexum was apparently not informed that blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the shell, and that this wadding is propelled out of the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired within a few inches of the body, especially if pointed at a particularly vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull, the wad struck him in the temple with enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain causing massive hemorrhaging.
Hexum was rushed to the Beverly Hills Medical Center where he underwent five hours of surgery to repair his wounds. Six days after the accident, Hexum was declared brain dead. Hexum's mother Greta allowed his body, still connected to life support, to be flown to San Francisco for organ transplants. Hexum's heart was then implanted into a then 36-year old Las Vegas escort service owner who was awaiting a heart transplant. Hexum's kidneys and corneas were also harvested and placed in organ transplant banks before his body was flown back to Los Angeles for autopsy and burial.

Mermoz
Jean. 1936-12-07

35

Born 1901-12-09. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Accident

On December 7, 1936, He came back shortly after take off to report a troublesome engine on his Laté 300 "Croix du Sud" ("Southern Cross"). As he found out that he couldn't wait for another one to be prepared, he took off again on the same plane after a quick repair, concerned that he would be late in delivering the mail. (His last words before boarding the plane were "Quick, let's not waste time anymore.") Four hours later, the radio station received a short message, where Mermoz declared that he had to cut the power on the aft starboard engine. The message was interrupted abruptly. No further messages were received, and neither the Laté 300 nor the crew were ever recovered. It is assumed that the engine they had tried to repair lost its propeller midflight, and being one of the aft engines, the loose propeller either badly damaged or cut the hull entirely, causing the plane to lose its tail and crash instantly. (Henri Guillaumet, one of Mermoz's fellow pilots, had encountered the same problem a few months before, but as his own engine was on the forward side, airspeed had been sufficient to maintain the propeller in place until the landing.)
