He was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTeam Quick Step and later for Leopard Trek. His first major win was the 17th stage of the 2008 Vuelta a Espańa. He also won the 3rd stage of the 2010 Giro d'Italia. In stage 3 of the 2011 Giro d'Italia, Weylandt crashed coming down the Passo del Bocco, near the town of Mezzanego, suffering catastrophic injury. While looking over his shoulder at other riders, the left side of his bike struck a wall, sending him across the road where he then hit another object at high speed. It is reported that CPR was carried out for around 25 minutes by two different paramedic teams, the one following the race at first, and the emergency team afterwards, to no avail. He was given adrenaline and atropine but the injuries were reported as too severe. All the resuscitation attempts failed and the sportsman was declared dead at the scene due to a fractured skull.
