Baire René-Louis (b. 1874-01-21 / d. 1932-07-05)

René-Louis Baire was a French mathematician most famous for his Baire category theorem, which helped to generalize and prove future theorems. His theory was published originally in his dissertation Sur les fonctions de variable réelles ("On the Functions of Real Variables") in 1899. Since he was young, Baire always had "delicate" health. He had developed problems with his esophagus before he attended school and he would occasionally experience severe attacks of agoraphobia. From time to time, his health would prevent him from working or studying. The bad spells became more frequent, immobilizing him for long periods of time. Over time, he had developed a kind of psychological disorder that made him unable to undertake work that required long periods of concentration. At times this would make his ability to research mathematics impossible. Between 1909 and 1914 this problem continually plagued him and his teaching duties became more and more difficult. He was given a leave of absence from the University of Dijon due to all these breakdowns. He retired from Dijon in 1925 and spent his last years living in multiple hotels that he could afford with his meager pension.

Judit Reigl was a Hungarian painter who lived in France. Reigl attended the Hungarian University of Fine Arts from 1942 to 1945 where she was the student of the celebrated painter István Szőnyi. She was awarded a scholarship from the Academy of Hungary in Rome which allowed her to study in Italy between 1947 and 1948. During her studies there she encountered Byzantine icons, the mosaics of Ravenna, the works of Giotto and Masaccio and the paintings of Venice's Giorgione and Titian amongst others. In 1950, when the Iron Curtain had divided Hungary and Western Europe, Reigl succeeded in crossing into Western Europe after eight previous attempts. She explained that her home country of Hungary solely commissioned her to paint portraits of ruling Communist leaders such as Stalin, Rákosi and Gerő, and so her defection to the West was necessary to preserve her artistic freedom. Reigl eventually reached Paris by crossing through Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium where she lived from 1950 to 1963. In 1963 she moved to Marcoussis (Île-de-France).

Born 1965-04-02. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Accident

He was an American man who was most famous for being the victim of an incident of alleged police brutality involving the Los Angeles Police Department on March 3, 1991. A bystander, George Holliday, witnessed the beating and videotaped much of the incident from a distance. The videotaped footage showed seven officers surrounding the solitary King, with several Los Angeles police officers repeatedly striking a helpless King with their batons while the other officers stood alongside watching the incident, without taking any noticeable action to stop the beating. A portion of this videotaped footage was aired by news agencies around the world, causing public outrage that increased tension between the local African American community and the Los Angeles Police Department, and increased public anger over police brutality, racism and other social inequalities in the city of Los Angeles, California. King's fiancée Cynthia Kelly found him dead in his swimming pool. Police in Rialto received a 911 call from Kelly at about 5:25 am PT.[48][49] Responding officers found King at the bottom of the pool, removed him, and attempted to revive him. He was transferred by ambulance to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, California. King was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:11 am. The Rialto Police Department began a standard drowning investigation and stated that there did not appear to be any foul play.

He may be best-remembered for his roles in several Mel Brooks films: the insane Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind in 1968's The Producers, and the relentless Police Inspector Hans Wilhelm Fredrich Kemp in 1974's Young Frankenstein. He also played Otto Mannkusser, in Malcolm in the middle, Francis' German boss and sidekick for the fourth and fifth seasons. He meets Francis while he had a 1974 broken car at the highway coming down from Alaska. Otto is in charge of The Grotto, a dude ranch (named after the two in the episode "Zoo,", Otto says "She is Gretchen, I am Otto - Grotto"). Otto is married to Gretchen and has an estranged son. Otto is gullible and a bit of a pushover; he hires too many employees and gives them extra vacation days. However, after Francis works on the ranch for a little over two years, Otto fires him when the ATM that Francis was depositing his funds into was not really an ATM. His last name might be derived from the ill-formed German expression "Mannküsser", literally meaning "man kisser." In the German version of the show, the Mannkussers are Danes and speak with a very heavy Danish accent.

Park
Gordon. 2010-01-25

66

Born 1944-01-25. Domain:Society. Cause of death:Suicide

The Lady in the Lake trial was a 2005 murder case in which Gordon Park, a retired teacher from Leece, near Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, was jailed for life for the murder of his first wife, Carol Ann Park, in 1976.
Carol Park went missing on 17 July 1976, and was never seen alive again by her family. In 1997, her body was discovered at the bottom of Coniston Water and Gordon was arrested on suspicion of murder. The charges were subsequently dropped but in 2004 Gordon was arrested again and found guilty of his wife's murder. The trial judge sentenced him to life imprisonment and recommended that he should serve a minimum of 15 years before being considered for parole. He was held at Garth prison, Leyland, Preston. In December 2007 he lodged an appeal against his conviction which was dismissed in November 2008. He was found hanged in his cell, and pronounced dead at the scene.
The details of the murder are sketchy. Carol was killed by her face being smashed by a blunt object of some sort, alleged in court to have been an ice axe. She was then bound with rope, using complex knots, weighed down with rocks and lead piping and thrown overboard from a boat on Coniston Water. The body landed on an underwater ledge where it was later found by amateur divers. Had it landed a few metres further from the shore, it would probably never have been discovered.
There was a great deal of controversy surrounding the case. Gordon received much support from his family and friends and maintained his innocence. There was a large amount of local interest in the trial as shown by the sales of the local paper, the North-West Evening Mail. Some claimed that much of the evidence against him could be discounted and there were vigils and petitions in attempts to free Gordon from prison and clear his name. The case featured prominently in the book No Smoke – The Shocking Truth About British Justice which outlined seven cases the author believed to be examples of innocent people being convicted of murder.
The morning of his 66th birthday, Park was found hanged and unconscious in his prison cell in Garth Prison, and pronounced dead at the scene later in the morning. It is believed that a ligature was involved, and that Park inflicted the injuries upon himself. Park had not been assessed for the risk of suicide. Jeremy Park said that "we are all completely devastated and still believe his innocence 100%."

The surgeon, whose motto was “there are no completely hopeless situations, and there should always be a way out,” will be remembered as being fearless by his colleagues. Often he took on board cases that his colleagues considered hopeless, and completed the operations successfully.
In a much-discussed case when he was performing an operation during the Siege of Leningrad during World War II, a shell exploded outside the window and the shock wave sent glass fragments flying into the room. Without thinking of his own safety, Uglov bent over the patient to protect the wound. When the nurse told the surgeon that the explosion had made her drop the only clean scalpel on to the floor, Uglov did not hesitate and completed the operation with a razor.

Eddie Griffin was killed when his SUV struck a freight train. Medical examiners in Harris County, Texas, required dental records to identify Griffin.
"Basketball was never an issue with him," said former Timberwolves head coach Dwane Casey. "He needed more life lessons, and, unfortunately, he was never able to reach his potential."
Griffin's career was marred by alcohol problems which resulted in a series of league suspensions and court dates, many of them handled by Hollingsworth.
"He had a problem with alcohol and I think that was a medication for him," Hollingsworth said. "And I think that led to a lot of issues."
Griffin was charged Nov. 20, 2003, with felonious aggravated assault with a deadly weapon plus assault causing bodily injury.
The charges stemmed from an Oct. 25 incident in which Griffin allegedly slapped girlfriend Joann Romero three times and fired a pistol in her direction as she departed his home in southwest Houston, when he played for the Rockets.
Griffin was suspended three games by the NBA and was later treated at the Betty Ford Center for alcohol abuse.
Last season with the Timberwolves, he was suspended for five games in January after violating the league's anti-drug program.
"Everybody tried to help him from the top to the bottom of the organization," Casey said. "He just could not get it straight.
On March 30, 2006, Eddie Griffin was drunk and masturbating when he crashed his luxury SUV into a parked Suburban outside a store in Minneapolis, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday by the man whose Suburban was hit in the crash.
Several of the 911 callers that night said Griffin was drunk. One witness said Griffin told him he was watching pornography in a DVD player mounted on the dashboard of his Cadillac Escalade SUV when he struck a Chevy Suburban parked on University Avenue Southeas.

Weston was to go over the bridge while fellow skydiver Jeb Corliss was to go under it. Just prior to the jump, Weston said to Corliss, "Just remember: whatever happens, happens." Miscalculating the winds and his distance from the bridge, Weston struck a railing while traveling at an estimated 120 miles per hour (190 km/h), severing one of his legs. After the impact with the bridge, Weston's parachute deployed and he fell onto a rock face about 300 feet (91 m) from the bottom of the gorge, where he bled to death. Spectators on the bridge witnessed and filmed the event, capturing the reaction of the crowd and the damage to the bridge.

His career was cut short, when he died of an overdose of heroin and cocaine (also known as a speedball).
Phoenix collapsed from a drug overdose of heroin and cocaine (known as a speedball) outside the Viper Room, a Hollywood night club partially owned by actor Johnny Depp until 2004. On the night of Phoenix's death, River was to perform onstage with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. At some point in the evening Phoenix went to the bathroom to take drugs with various friends and dealers. It is reported that an acquaintance offered him some Persian Brown (a powerful form of methamphetamine mixed with opiates, which is then snorted) and soon after consuming the drug he became ill. Upon leaving The Viper Room, he collapsed onto the sidewalk and began convulsing for eight minutes. His brother Joaquin, sister Rain and actress Samantha Mathis were at the scene. Joaquin dialed 911; during the call Joaquin was unable to determine whether River was breathing. River had, in fact, already stopped breathing. Paramedics arrived on the scene and found Phoenix in asystole (flat line), when they administered drugs in an attempt to restart his heart. He was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center via an ambulance. Further attempts to resuscitate Phoenix (including the insertion of a pacemaker) were unsuccessful.
